BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Montero will be the Diamondbacks' highest-paid player this year after signing a five-year contract extension in May worth $60 million that will keep him behind the plate through 2017. It was the largest contract in team history, and Montero responded with his lowest ISO since his rookie year, though his plate discipline soared to new heights as he finished with the fourth-highest walk rate among National League qualifiers. His competence at the plate overshadows some of his struggles behind it: Montero's sub-par pitch-framing cost Arizona pitchers approximately 15 runs, according to our metrics. If those struggles persist, Diamondbacks pitchers could be in for a frustrating summer of uncalled strikes.
2012 The D-Backs made Montero their catcher of the future when they traded Chris Snyder to the Pirates in 2010. They might not have gotten the best possible returnóD.J. Carrasco, Ryan Church, and Bobby Crosby are all either out of the game already or rapidly approaching retirementóbut in light of Snyderís injury issues last season, it looks like they backed the right backstop. According to WARP, Montero was a top-five catcher in 2011, his first All-Star campaign, and thatís without giving him full credit for his defense. Arizonaís catcher cupboard is bare behind Montero, who wonít turn 29 until July. Itís time to start talking extension.
2011 One of the most promising young catchers in the game, Montero hurt his right knee in early April and returned in mid-June. His numbers took a dip in approximately half a season's worth of playing time, but remained more than acceptable by backstop standards. The Diamondbacks agreed, trading former starter Chris Snyder to the Pirates in July and solidifying Montero's status as their primary catcher in the process. As long as the injury doesn't linger, he should be even more productive this season, though it would help if he could lay off of slop out of the zone, a characteristic he had seemingly shaken during his 2009 campaign. The regression in that area could have been attributable to the bum knee, but regardless of its origins, better pitch recognition was the difference between an outstanding offensive performance by Montero and a merely good one.
2010 On his way out the door, Randy Johnson left the Diamondbacks with a ringing endorsement of Montero, formerly the personal catcher of the lanky lefty. After two seasons in which his promise outperformed the results, Montero established himself in 2009 as one of the best all-around catchers in the game. Montero did regress in one aspect of his game, experiencing a decline in walk rate in part due to a higher percentage of swings at pitches out of the strike zone. That he lopped a third off of his strikeout rate in spite of this was a good sign, but if he returns to hacking he will need to exhibit more patience to make up for the resultant decline in batting average.
2009 With Chris Snyder's emergence, Montero became a backup who got some extra at-bats because he was also Randy Johnson's personal catcher. In truth, there's not a huge difference between these two catchers; Snyder has the defensive edge and a bit more power, but Montero is the better all-around hitter. Other teams recognize this, which is why Montero was high on this winter's wish list for teams looking for catching help. Pending a trade, Montero has been taking some ground balls at third base in hopes of becoming the next Todd Zeile or something more lucrative than being the exclusive caddy for a pitcher who is no longer with the team.
2008 Montero was another in the club's cadre of rookie disappointments. His power was pure park fiction, and his value as a platoon player isn't much when he's only reaching base against right-handers at a .291 clip. Montero also struggled to contain the running game, and, since he's not the most polished receiver around, every weakness behind the plate gets magnified. If he's only the new Greg Myers, that's valuable, but his projection should help his believers keep their faith.
2007 Montero went hitless in his big league debut, but so did the rest of the D`backs against Anibal Sanchez that night. By then Montero had already proven that his big year in Lancaster in 2005 wasn`t just a park illusion. More importantly, Montero has improved his defense to the point that it`s no longer a reason to keep him out of the lineup. His arm isn`t so great that he`ll win between-innings accuracy contests, but it`s not Piazza-poor, either. He probably won`t get much better than this, but with Johnny Estrada now in Milwaukee, he and Chris Snyder will form a productive, low-cost catching tandem for a few years.
2006 Montero broke out in 2005, though the usual organization-wide caveats apply, as he hit .404/.445/.718 at home and "just" .307/.371/.553 on the road. But even with the Lancaster boost, his High-A season was pretty impressive, resulting in a Cal League batting title. He had the usual/expected slump after being promoted to Double-A, so the permanence of his offensive gains are in doubt. He improved his defense in 2005, to the point where he was no longer a liability behind the plate. With neither Chris Snyder nor Koyie Hill doing much to inspire confidence, he could be on the organization`s radar sooner than you think. Like, now.

2011-01-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on Miguel Montero? He had a huge 2009 second half: 254 PA, .316/.366/.534 (on a .358 BABIP) and 11 Bombs. I thought he could be roughly equal to Brian McCann in 2010 but had the knee injury in the first week. What do you think happens to him in 2011?
(Tom from New York)
I like Montero, but not more than McCann or even as much. I think he'll be a pretty good pickup, but some people may overrate him, which makes him kind of dangerous to chase. (Marc Normandin)
2010-06-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)What can we expect out of Miguel Montero when he gets back?
(Phyllis from Irvine, CA)
The same thing you should have expected out of him at the beginning of the year. Dude's one of the better hitting catchers out there, and very undervalued. (Marc Normandin)
2010-05-11 16:30:00 (link to chat)So far it has been a rough fantasy season for me. I have had 5 players hit the DL already (Miguel Montero, Aaron Hill, Yunel Escobar, Carlos Beltran and Brad Hawpe). So I am playing with a lot of replacement level players. My main question is, should I keep Gordon Beckham and Jason Kubel? They have been in tremendous slumps. and if so, who should I replace them with? Is Ryan Ludwick a better option in the outfield? Please help.
(csatte1 from Baltimore, MD)
Gordon Beckham really seems like a young hitter who is adjusting. His BABIP is low because if too many grounders and pop-ups, but he should work that out. Jason Kubel just isn't hitting the ball as hard as last year. Fewer balls hit to the outfield, fewer HR. He's probably working out kinks in his swing, but I can't imagine he's as valuable as Beckham, even though I don't do fantasy baseball so I don't really know league scarcity that well. Ryan Ludwick seems he's just a little less patient hitter with maybe a little more power. Not sure how that plays in here. I guess Ludwick is better especially with Kubel needing to work out some kinks. (Matt Swartz)
2010-03-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)do you lose any sleep deciding between nathan, rivera or papelbon? also, I think you're too harsh on Rasmus and Montero in your rankings.
(stewbies from rochester)
Miguel Montero? I said he was *at least* as good as his projection, and if he weren't splitting time with Snyder he'd be worth more. I do love Montero.

Rasmus isn't bad, there's just a lot more to choose from, and he hasn't shown me enough to get excited yet. I'm more interested in his 2011 than his 2010. (Marc Normandin)
2010-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Miguel Montero. Looks pretty tasty to me. Your thoughts?
(firejerrymanuel from ny)
Thanks for stopping in. I'm a big fan of Montero, especially if he's picking up the playing time he deserves. I probably ranked him too high last season considering he was in a time share, but then he ended up starting and inadvertently made me look like I knew what I was talking about. Thanks, Miggy! (Marc Normandin)
2009-12-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)How does Miguel Montero stack up against other catchers? I know there are problems with half-season splits, but he went nuts this year in the second half.
(Rob from Alaska)
I'm a huge fan, have been for a while. (And as I write that, I feel like I answered this question in my previous chat.) In any case, I see him as a .290/.370/.480 catcher with average defense, a championship-caliber player. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-11-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who hangs up first on a Justin Upton for Bumgarner-and-Posey swap?
(Martin from Tucson)
The Diamondbacks, largely because Miguel Montero is pretty good. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-11-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Miguel Montero for 2010? Will he build on his strong 2nd half?
(John from Trenton, NJ)
I think I lost this answer...like him a lot, championship-caliber bat, .290/.365/.470, average defense, no speed. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-10-09 13:30:00 (link to chat)What kind of a prospect was Miguel Montero? Was his breakout this year for real?
(Rob from Alaska)
I always had him pretty darn high -- so yes, I think it is. (Kevin Goldstein)
