2006 Day may have been safer training with the Taliban than pitching last year, as he was hit by comebackers twice. The first broke his wrist and sidelined him for three months, the second broke his thumb, ending his season. He pitches like Aaron Cook, striking out very few batters, keeping the ball in the park, and letting the defense pick him up. It`s a tough act to maintain at altitude, but he`ll get a shot at the fifth spot in the rotation.
2005 Looked pretty well recovered from his rotator cuff injury, though he spent significant time on the DL with "dead arm" and then broke a finger bunting. Day's a low-strikeout guy who depends on his defense, not giving up walks, and getting a lot of groundballs to keep the ball in the stadium. Vidro and Guzman are locked in for years to come, so the Expos might do well to move Day for full value soon, before their defense starts making him look bad.
2003 Day mixes a heavy fastball, burrowing sinker, and slurve to generate oodles of ground balls. Paired with great strikeout rates in 2000, you could almost see shades of Kevin Brown if you squinted really hard. His K rates have fallen off sharply since then, conjuring up images of a less successful, right-handed Kirk Rueter. Scouty types still think his clean motion and solid repertoire could translate into success in the middle of a rotation, or higher. The Expos would do well to keep breaking Day in as a reliever, bumping him to high-leverage situations if he succeeds. If he can add a strikeout and shave a walk per nine innings off his record, he’d set up well as a member of the 2004 rotation.
2002 Although the Indians aren’t exactly flush with mound hopefuls, they were willing to give up Day for Milton Bradley after Day regressed from an outstanding 2000 season. Most disturbing is his plummeting strikeout rate. Day’s best pitch is a sinker, so strikeouts aren’t vital to his success, but their relative paucity indicates something was wrong. Having learned from the L’Affaire Bridges, the Expos turned off the innings spigot at 160. They hope a quiet off-season will cure whatever ails Day.
2001 Zach Day missed most of 1998 following surgery to repair his rotator cuff and spent 1999 putting himself back together. He earns high good marks for knowing what he’s doing on the mound, because he gets by with only a good sinker and a change-up, mixing in breaking stuff for show. He keeps the ball on the ground and doesn’t get hit hard. Jake Westbrook’s talent makes him better-known, but Day looks like the best prospect from the David Justice deal.
