2008 Side-armer Matt Miller once had a steady job in the Cleveland bullpen, but he's now 36 and has been passed by the plethora of young relievers in the system.
2007 For former Independent Leaguer Matt Miller to reach the majors at all is a huge accomplishment, but also a point in favor of the situational value of sidearmers. He`s supposedly all the way back from elbow surgery, but the Cleveland pen will be crowded with possibilities this year.
2005 Here's a sweet story. Miller entered pro baseball as a non-draft free agent of the Rangers back in 1997. A sidearmer, he pitched effectively for most of his minor league career, but because of his limited stuff no one wanted to trust him. The Rockies, who had, have, will have nothing to lose, finally gave him a chance, then passed him onto the Indians where, glory be, he became exhibit #52,398 in the brief on Why Minor League Statistics Are Meaningful. Lefties are not intimidated by Miller. This is the common affliction of sidearmers, whose manner of pitching gives lefties a very good look at every pitch. As long as Miller is used as a righty specialist, he'll be fine; he held right-handed hitters to .201/.263/.266 last season. A player who toiled in the minor league underworld for so long should have his own moderately threatening theme song, something like "Matt the Knife." Oh, the line forms… on the right, babe… Now that Matt is back in town…
2004 Ready to step into a Steve Reed sort of role as a right-handed relief specialist, after consistently showing a big platoon split. The Tribe's pen is pretty crowded, but he might yet stick.
