BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2010 In his six seasons in the bigs, Matsui's offensive production has always come and gone with his batting average, as he's never been able to find the pop he had in Japan, leaving him prone to the whims of the most volatile of offensive stats. That didn't work out so well in 2009, as his average fell 43 points. If nothing else, his strikeout rate wasn't abnormally high (only 0.3 percent higher than his career mark), and his walk rate didn't completely fall off the map. He also set a career high in games played and plate appearances, which is a moral victory in itself, but the Astros probably would have been better off had they given his 335 plate appearances in the first two slots in the order to someone else, Matsui having put up a .287 OBP there. Expect something of a bounce-back in the last year of his deal, but nothing to get overly excited about.
2009 Matsui opened the season with one of the nastiest sounding injuries ever ever suffered by a baseball player, an anal fissure, and followed that up with a rather more prosaic list of back, groin, and hamstring ailments. This is a recurring problem; he hasn't had a 500-AB season since leaving Japan. He was reasonably effective in between all the injuries, dispelling our fears of Coors inflation, but "injury-prone" and "reliant on speed" are an especially poor combination for the future.
2008 It's hard to not see Matsui's 2007 season as an altitude-induced fluke. His .249/.304/.333 performance on the road was much closer to his major league career averages than his .330/.381/.482 line at Coors. Still, he provided lineup balance, excellent basestealing, and had better range than Carroll. Those things had value, but they don't represent a career renaissance. The Astros, who signed him to a three-year deal, will be disappointed.
2007 When you combine his copious badness in New York with his Denver comeback, you end up with a season that almost perfectly matches his 2004-2005 totals. Though several Japanese teams showed interest in reclaiming their nation`s tarnished star, Matsui elected to sign a one-year contract with the Rockies with a base value of $1.5 million and another $950,000 of possible incentives. That`s quite a comedown from his previous $6.7 million contract, though not a bad reward for 125 Denver-ized plate appearances. He`ll split time at second with Carroll.
2006 `Worst film you ever saw? Well, my next one will be better.` As it was for Ed Wood, so it went for Kaz Matsui in his rookie season in the States: the next one was even worse. Injuries cut into his already slender ability. The reason you bring someone from half a world away is because they can do things that local talent cannot; it`s the whole premise of the H-1 Visa. The exercise becomes pointless if you`re just importing junk.
2005 Perhaps the biggest disappointment in baseball last year after being a Barry Larkin clone in Japan, Matsui was a slightly below-average player in his first Stateside season. It might have turned out differently had a bad back not sidelined him for much of the second half, because his bat was coming around in July and early August. He's moving to second base this season to accommodate Jose Reyes, reversing the controversial decision of last spring. Look for him to emulate another Matsui and hit a lot more like his old self in his sophomore year.
