2006 Mariner pitching prospect coming off a promising season suffers a serious arm injury. What else is new? What`s sad is this might have been avoided if the Mariners had exercised prudence. Last year we wrote: `In meaningless games Madritsch racked up huge pitch counts. Sometimes he looked fresh, sometimes he was clearly dragging when (Manager Bob) Melvin sent him out for more punishment. For his failure to preserve his best healthy pitcher for next year, Melvin should have been fired far earlier than he was.` There`s no way to know exactly if those high pitch count outings led to the partial tear in the labrum of Madritsch`s pitching shoulder, but there`s just no reason to tempt fate when your season`s ostensibly over. Claimed by the Royals, he`s a long shot to make an impact ever again.
2005 The only pitcher who is absolutely the 2005 rotation. Madritsch is utterly unflappable. Blown calls, cheap errors, mistake pitches jumped on, none of these things affect him. Overall, his work in '04 was as good as you should expect him to be, and that's a solid contribution on any team. Considering the Reds abandoned him after career-ending injuries and he fought his way back up from the independent leagues, we take our hats off to him.

Madritsch claims he's never had health problems since he got the medicine wheel tattooed on his neck. The Mariners should consider offering it free to any player in their system. It couldn't make things worse. Even protected by that talisman, the late-season abuse was unconscionable. In meaningless games Madritsch racked up huge pitch counts. Sometimes he looked fresh, sometimes he was clearly dragging when Melvin sent him out for more punishment. For his failure to preserve his best healthy pitcher for next year, Melvin should have been fired far earlier than he was.
