2013 A sinkerballer named Loe shouldn’t have any trouble remembering where he needs to locate his pitches, but last season the towering right-hander kept making mistakes up in the zone. The inevitable result: more home runs and hits allowed and a drop in the groundball rate that has made him a valuable bullpen workhorse. Loe’s struggles were amplified down the stretch and he struggled to retire lefties, a combination that made it easy for Milwaukee to cut ties with him at season’s end. He still misses a lot of bats, and if he can work out his mechanical kinks and stay on top of his sinker, Loe should continue his worm-killing ways well into his thirties.
2012 Most often, starter-turned-reliever success stories involve fireballers who can throw 100 percent and blow people away. Like a fastball-only pitcher, Loe really only has one above-average pitch, but it's his 90-mph sinker that breaks bats and leads to a 63 percent ground-ball rate. He was brought into games 10 times with a runner on first base and less than two outs, and as he further refines his command and enters games more often in GDP situations, he could have an even greater impact.
2011 Loe signed with the Brewers as organizational depth after spending an unsuccessful year in Japan, and the veteran swingman eventually rewarded his new employers with an eye-opening season in Milwaukee’s pen. It was no surprise to see the dedicated sinkerballer generate more than his fair share of two-hoppers, but nobody expected all those punchouts. Loe’s swinging-strike rate climbed to nearly 10 percent, by far a career high, as his two-seamer kept darting out of the zone, drawing weak swings, soft contact, and inning-long games of infield patty-cake. When veterans suddenly post a season of bullpen dominance it’s usually a fluke, but Loe’s sinker seems to be a new pitch, and if he can keep his strikeout rate at its current level he’ll remain a terrific bullpen find.
2009 In the legion of non-descript swingmen who've swung through the Rangers' roster, you can delete Kameron Loe—he was the tallish one—as he's been sold off to Fukuoka in the Japanese leagues.
2008 Loe's bread and butter pitch is his sinker, which is made even more effective by his height, but he's maddeningly inconsistent. Last year he made seven starts in which he allowed one or fewer earned runs, but was also rocked for six or more runs seven times. It's a sad fact of life: if you can't miss bats consistently-and Loe can't-you can't be consistently successful.
2007 After a nice turn in late 2005, Loe began the year in the Texas rotation and alternated decent starts with disastrous ones as if on a schedule to do so. He got off the seesaw in June with three consecutive bad starts and was placed on the disabled list with a bruised elbow soon thereafter. That marked the end of the big league portion of his 2006 season. His strikeout rate is in the danger zone (3.91), although that can work for him as long as he continues to keep the hitters on the ground, after all, his strikeout rate wasn`t that much better in 2005 when he pitched his way into the Rangers plans.
2006 Despite talk that he profiles as a reliever, Loe`s name is penciled into the 2006 rotation primarily because of one number: his groundball to flyball ratio. The Rangers believe their only hope of succeeding in their park is to keep the ball on the ground, and they`ve preached this at every level of their system. Loe proved an apt student, finishing the year with a 2.5 GB:FB ratio, and allowing only seven home runs in over 92 innings. He doesn`t throw as hard as you`d expect from someone his size, but his high-80s sinker gets things done. It`s not hard to see his career pan out like Walt Terrell or perhaps even Derek Lowe, never striking out enough batters for comfort, but getting enough groundouts to munch innings and help win a few ballgames.
2005 One of the few promising pitchers in the organization. Loe has good command of some reasonable pitches, and will be in the running for a rotation spot, health permitting, in spring training. He's got everything you want in a pitcher except the absolutely blazing fastball, and it's conceivable he could be the Rangers' #1 starter by August.
