BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2012 Living proof that being lefthanded will always earn you another chance, Wil Ledezma has compiled a 5.40 ERA in 396 1/3 big-league innings for seven different clubs in 13 years. With just 31 1/3 innings over the past three seasons, it seems teams are catching onto his ruse, though.
2011 The Pirates handled Ledezma quite strangely. Like many teams before them, the Pirates fell in love with his arm, the rare left-side appendage that can crank a fastball up to 95 mph. They liked it so much that they signed him to a one-year contract worth $700,000 to avoid arbitration as soon as last season ended. Perhaps the Pirates have found the secret to unlocking Ledezma's potential, as two bad outings last year inflated his ERA and masked a decent season out of the bullpen. Still, $700,000 is an awful lot to risk on a pitcher with a shaky track record for a franchise that literally watches every last penny, all of which makes it doubly odd that they designated him for assignment in late December to make room on the 40-man roster for waiver-claim Aaron Thompson.
2009 The Padres got Ledezma through waivers at the middle of the season in order to send him to Triple-A, but when they tried it again in September, the bullpen-desperate D'backs couldn't resist grabbing him. He's long been frustrating to scouts, as left-handers who can get it up into the mid-90s don't exactly grow on trees, but his lack of control and a reliable secondary offering make job security unlikely. As if to demonstrate this point, Arizona non-tendered him, but somebody will bite on the hard-throwing lefty, because they always do.
2008 Lanky, long-armed and frustrating as hell, Ledezma was twice dealt for other left-handed relievers last year, a sign that he's not filling the need for his teams. Using him as a starter hasn't worked either, as his ERA and ratios are worse when he opens the game. His live arm means he'll keep getting chances, and there are worse places for a guy to try to pull it together than San Diego, but he could still be two teams from finding himself.
2007 Ledezma throws hard enough for a left-handed pitcher, but he`s really at his best when he`s not trying to blow the ball by people and instead focuses on changing speeds and getting strikeouts of the caught-looking variety. There are ample signs that he can accomplish that better as a relief pitcher--he had a fairly large starter-reliever ERA split last year (4.29 versus 2.55), and when he did start, he lost effectiveness after the 30th pitch. If the Tigers` give him the left-handed setup job vacated by Jamie Walker, Ledezma should beat his PECOTA, perhaps by a good margin.
2005 A Rule 5 pick that worked. The Tigers nabbed Ledezma after 2002, kept him active in '03, let him return to regular rotation work in '04, and now it looks like he's ready. And why not? Lefties who throw 90-plus with a good curveball don't grow on trees. PECOTA expects some near-term regression, mostly because Ledezma's history as a flyball pitcher could portend a rising home-run rate. But if he can use his developing change-up to keep hitters off-balance, he should beat that projection.
