2016 Erik Kratz is just keeping the seat warm at this point, but everything about his intangibles and makeup suggest that he could maybe one day find himself back in a dugout as a coach.
2015 Kratz is your typical backup backstop, with solid catch-and-throw skills, a good reputation as a game-caller, the ability to occasionally turn on a fastball and plus cheerleading skills. "Turkey Bacon" is fine running the staff for a few games at a time, but if he has to catch every day for a month his bat will be exposed for the cheap substitute it is. Now that the Royals are bona fide contenders, they may need to be a little more aspirational in their bench choices.
2014 Erik Kratz was a great story in 2012. He was a 32-year-old rookie, hitting a game-tying home run off Craig Kimbrel, contributing to a contender attempting to win the NL East for the sixth straight year. This all earned him the nickname "Turkey Bacon," inspired by his appearance in a local TV ad featuring a talking cartoon fowl. The success was short. He started the 2013 season as the everyday catcher while Carlos Ruiz served a 25-game suspension, but he never got rolling, finishing with exactly as many HR and RBI as he had in 2012, but in 61 more plate appearances. He was exposed as a full-timer and sent to Toronto for Brad Lincoln, but as far as backup catchers go, you could do worse.
2013 Kratz is a journeyman catcher who finally got a shot at some serious playing time in the majors. There he displayed some big power consistent with the power he had demonstrated at Triple-A. Old catcher skills coming to the fore or simply good fortune in a pair of small samples? Almost certainly the latter. If the Phillies plan to use Kratz as the starter while Carlos Ruiz serves his suspension for amphetamines, then he'll be exposed. That is, unless he has suddenly acquired the ability to hit home runs on 20 percent of his fly balls. Spoiler alert: He hasnít.
2012 A catcher with three straight 800 OPS seasons who still hasnít gotten a look-see in the majors, Erik Kratz is either the next Chris Coste or the next Dane Sardinha.
2011 Drafted in the 29th round way back in 2002, Erik Kratz made his major-league debut last July as a 30-year-old in his ninth professional season but was removed from the 40-man roster in the offseason. He signed a minor-league contract with his hometown Phillies in November.
2010 Known as an organizational player good at handling pitchers, big Erik Kratz has hit well enough to earn consideration for some major-league time.

Thanks, David. I thoroughly enjoyed talking to Erik Kratz. FIELDf/x could conceivably double as QUIETf/x. (Ben Lindbergh)
