2013 Kinney signed a minor-league deal with the Mariners and ended up as a high-leverage reliever in September, but high-leverage with the Mariners isn't the same as on a contending team. Despite the seemingly significant major-league role, Kinney could easily play out the rest of his career with minor-league stints. Seventy percent of the pitches he throws have a bend on them, so hell get strikeouts but struggle with control. This is particularly so for lefties, one in seven of whom have walked against Kinney in his career.
2012 Slider-iffic reliever Josh Kinney struggled on the South Side and was outrighted; hes never been the same since his 2007 Tommy John surgery, and is rapidly running out of chances.
2010 Years removed from some post-season production in '06, Kinney finally came back from Tommy John surgery to earn a spot in the Opening Day pen, but proved to still be dealing with the post-surgical lack of sharpness that can follow the procedure. He tended to nibble against lefties ("Take your base.") and miss up to righties ("A cookie, for me?"), a formula for big innings in the big leagues. He should be sharper now, but will have to earn his spot towards the back of the bullpen.
2009 Kinney was one of the unlikely heroes of the 2006 postseason, pitching 6 1/3 scoreless innings after debuting that July. He underwent Tommy John surgery the following spring, and took longer than most pitchers to return from the procedure, suffering several setbacks during the 2008 season. Kinney finally made it back last September, 18 months after his surgery, and looked sharp in limited action. He should land a spot in the 2009 bullpen.
2008 One of the key arms in the 2006 championship bullpen, Josh Kinney suffered a torn UCL last March, underwent Tommy John surgery, and missed the season. A broken arm suffered during rehab pushed his return back to midseason
2007 Fished out of the Frontier League in mid-2001, Kinney endured six seasons in the Cards system and one shoulder surgery before finally getting the call last July. The results weren`t bad. A low-velocity, sinker-slider type, he`ll battle for a bullpen spot this spring as something slightly more useful than a righty situational guy. Not many from among the competition will have 6 1/3 scoreless innings in the postseason to their credit.
