YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Kawasaki's story can be told in full because it’s over and there won’t be a sequel: Kawasaki wanted to play in the majors but only if he could play with his hero, Ichiro. He got an invite to Mariners spring training even though he didn't hit in Japan in 2011 as a 30-year-old. But he led all of baseball in batting average in spring training and made the team. Ichiro’s team! What a story! And then he was unspeakably bad, knocking one extra-base hit all year. Among pitchers he would have been in the 65th percentile for slugging. But he was the smiliest Mariner, “often seen dancing or doing aerobics in the dugout,” according to a local newspaper account. He was released in October.
2012 Kawasaki is a veteran shortstop from the Japanese leagues trying his luck on a minor-league deal with the Mariners. He's chosen the right team to sign with given the Mariners' notable past successes with NPB imports, and he's gotten some attention early in spring training. Kawasaki is a glove-first player who is very unlikely to hit at all, and the Mariners already have one of those guys to play shortstop in Brendan Ryan. He'd add some speed off the bench, but he's fragile, and he offers zero positional flexibility.

2012-05-31 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hey, Jason. I'm just wondering who, in your opinion, are the five scrappiest players in the majors today. Please use statistics to back up your assertions.
(Noah from NY)
Mark Ellis: almost died, definitely scrappy
Adam Rosales: runs real fast everywhere he goes, super scrappy
Josh Willingham: plays baseball despite having two-foot-long legs, mad scrappy
Jose Altuve: like 5'2", so scrappy
Munenori Kawasaki: has made a career out of being an Ichiro-stalker, hella scrappy

Stats are not scrappy. (Jason Wojciechowski)
