2013 Right-handed reliever Ryota Igarashi baffles minor-league hitters, but his 95-mph fastball is flat and he hands out walks more freely than Oprah does cars, including five more in four innings for the Yankees and Blue Jays last season.
2012 The Mets designated Igarashi for assignment before the season, but nobody bit, so in the end they got 69 innings of pretty bad relief work for their $2 million investment. Like many Japanese pitchers, Igarashi has a deep arsenal, but none of his pitches are especially good on a big-league level, and his arm angle and lack of size caused most of his fastball variations (four-seam, two-seam, splitter) to flatten out. He signed with the Pirates, which makes a lot of sense if you think about it.
2011 Igarashi's first exposure to the States didn't go smoothly. The righty struggled to keep the ball in the strike zone. He also injured his hamstring and landed on the disabled list, which derailed his season and ultimately consigned him to Triple-A. Igarashi relies on his mid-90s fastball and also picked up misses with his changeup on the rare occasions that he chose to throw one. While his ERA still wasn't great, his second-half numbers represented a small-sample improvement, featuring a whiff per inning and an 11/5 K/BB ratio. He will get a second chance to prove that he belongs in a major-league bullpen in 2011, and a salary of just $1.75 million gives him at least a remote chance of being a bargain.
2010 Igarashi was once one of the most feared relievers in Japan, with an upper-90s fastball, but Tommy John surgery in 2007 cost him some velocity, and he's now suited to be set-up man. The fastball still combines above-average velocity with good command, and like many Japanese pitchers, a stuttered delivery provides an extra bit of deception. A decent slider is his breaking pitch, and while at 30 he's past his prime, some international scouts think that a $3 million deal for two years could end up being a bargain.
