2008 A Rule 5 pick from the Astros, Houlton spent all of 2005 on the big league roster, but his shaky performance mandated further minor league seasoning. Las Vegas is a particularly rough place for a fly-baller to iron things out, but Houlton improved command of his 88- to 90-mph fastball last year and took a solid step forward, boosting his K/PA by ten percent and cutting his home run rate by 25 percent. Those gains held up during a pair of second-half stints with the Dodgers. He should get a shot at a middle-relief job with the big club this year.
2007 A Rule 5 pick who lasted the full year with the Dodgers in 2005, D.J. Houlton was sent back to Las Vegas last year, hell on earth for a fly ball pitcher with his middling skills.
2006 Plucked from the Astros in the Rule 5 draft, Houlton couldn`t have asked for a better shot at lasting the year on a big-league roster than with this shorthanded staff. After getting pounded in relief, he wormed his way into the rotation due to the pain and suffering of others. Though he reliably took the ball every fifth day, he was drubbed regularly; five of his eight quality starts came against the lowest-scoring teams in the majors. He pitched noticeably better at pitcher-friendly Dodger Stadium (4.13 ERA, vs. 6.37 on the road). He`ll have a shot at the back end of the rotation again, but now he can be sent to the minors if the going gets rough.
2005 Houlton is a command guy who throws a lot of off-speed stuff and puts balls in the air. He reached Triple-A in 2003 and could have been there last season but for a glut of arms at New Orleans. The Dodgers, who have just the park for a guy like this, took Houlton in the Rule 5 draft. Remember the name; he's good enough to be a league-average starter, and the Dodgers have a lot of question marks at the back of their rotation.
