BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2007 When you look at Halsey`s EqERAs, you see only one good number, his solid campaign three years ago with the Yankees` Triple-A farm club. That`s true even if you go back to 2003 (not pictured here). The A`s could use a reliable LOOGY, but Halsey doesn`t seem particularly suited to that role; lefties have hit .273/.338/.427 against him in the major leagues. Halsey`s a lefty, and he can give you five or six innings in a pinch, so he`s got some value, but if he can`t improve his slider or develop a good curveball, he`s not going to be around much longer.
2006 A control lefty with pretty uninspiring strikeout numbers, Admiral Halsey was adequate in the D-Back rotation after beating out Mike Gosling for the job. Halsey`s season wasn`t actually that promising, though, as he was torched by righties to the tune of .309/.357/.489, and his acceptable ERA disguises 19 unearned runs. If there`s some consolation to be taken from 2005, it`s that he pitched better at home than on the road. Likely staring at a 2006 of LOOGYing.
2005 There is nothing outstanding about "Admiral" Halsey but for the arm he throws with and his good control (2.16 walks per nine). As the Yankees were dramatically short of southpaws, their refusal to try Halsey in the bullpen represents a serious failure of imagination. Halsey had good success against lefties (.143/.212/.250), and though the sample is small, the Yankees were desperate enough that the numbers merited further exploration. If God is in the details, Halsey will be in middle relief. He'll be starting for the Arizona Diamondbacks, so…uhh…there is no God?
