BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2008 The Reds took Jerry Gil, a cannon-armed shortstop, and turned him into a cannon-armed outfielder. He promptly blew out the elbow on that cannon and missed the 2007 campaign.
2007 Gil had a nice little breakout of sorts at the plate last year, but his 111:18 strikeout-to-walk ratio in the Southern League was pretty gruesome. The Snakes were frustrated that Gil wasn`t working on improving his approach to hitting and dealt him to the Reds for Abe Woody, but that power is tantalizing enough to make him a compelling utility alternative to the Juan Castros and the Quinton McCrackens of the world, particularly when faced with Cincinnati`s reachable fences. Were it not for that power, Gil, gifted with one of the best arms on the planet, might have been moved to the mound by now.
2006 Offseason knee surgery shouldn`t be a factor in his development, because there wasn`t much developing going on, anyway. Scouts rave about his defense and particularly his arm, but offensively, his OBP has never topped .300. With the list of hitter-friendly leagues and ballparks on his resume, that`s inexcusable.
2005 Well, he has youth on his side. He's also got a career BB/K ratio of 29/275, which is comparable to Dennis Eckersley's, if you're a creepy optimist who laughs at inopportune times. If you think Gil bears a striking resemblance to various no-hit catchers, you're probably right, but this is the shortstop version; the poor offense still inflates the defensive reputation, because even after all these years, Sherri Nichols still knows more about baseball than we ever will.
