| Date | Question | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| 2010-01-13 13:00:00 | Do the Pirates plan on Ryan Church being an everyday OF or a 4th OF, as far as you can tell? (collins from greenville nc) | Most likely, fourth OF. (John Perrotto) |
| 2010-01-13 13:00:00 | Does Jeff Clement still have a good shot at opening the season as the Pirates first baseman even after the Ryan Church signing? (Stu from Charlotte) | The Pirates really want to see what Clement can do. I'd be really surprised if he isn't starting on opening day. (John Perrotto) |
| 2009-12-09 13:00:00 | Ryan Church a good fit for the White Sox at a corner? How much do you expect him to get on the market? (Gerard from Chicago) | Not much, a one-year deal, maybe not even three million. I could see him in Chicago, but I think they can do better. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2009-10-13 14:00:00 | Matt Diaz kills left-handed pitching. Isn't it easier to find him a righty-masher platoon mate than to find a full-time left fielder? (Christopher from Nashville) | How many lefty platoon mashers are there, though? Not as many as you'd think, and many of them wind up employed as everyday players already, given the roster crunch that favors employment of fourth-tier relievers at the expense of tactical weapons on offense. They just tried it with Garret Anderson, after a fashion, and that flopped. Trying it again with Ryan Church or seeing if there's anything left with Brian Giles? The best best might be to get in on any offers for Brad Hawpe. (Christina Kahrl) |
| 2009-05-18 14:00:00 | Starts Jermey Reed at 1b and Daniel Murphy in LF and Gary Sheffield in RF (go get 'em Carlos!) as Ryan Church sits the bench. Starts Gary Sheffield in RF at bats him 4th. Omir Santos starts again! Sacrifice bunts with no one out and a runner on second IN THE FIRST INNING. Pinch hits for Daniel Murphy with Angel F. Pagan with the bases loaded and one out in the 8th inning down by two. These are all things Jerry Manuel did JUST LAST NIGHT. Was he this bad in Chicago? BTW- Mets didn't score in the first (or ever for that matter.) Pagan grounded into a double play. Sheffield went 0 for 4 and left 4 on base. (Dave from NJ) | He was, and he will be. That the Mets were impressed with him was proof they didn't remember that this was what happened last time around: Manuel aced his interview, says all the right things in a conference room, and then handicapped his ballclub with his fascination with ways of insinuating himself into the ballgame. I know it means something to Mets fans if I label the man "Torborgian," but that's what you're working with, with a dash of braggadocio to spice things up a bit. (Christina Kahrl) |
| 2009-04-06 13:00:00 | Thoughts on Ryan Church and the rest of the Mets crowded outfield? (wml212 from NYC) | Church's glove makes him an asset with his average bat, especially if the Mets are playing Murphy in left field. I don't think Tatis or Sheffield has much left, and had it been me, I would have signed Abreu or Dunn when the prices dropped to the bottom. The chance that the Nats and Mets make a trade this season approaches 1. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2009-02-10 14:00:00 | Is Fernando Martinez the next Jay Payton and should the Mets sign Abreu to play in the outfield? (mwashuc06 from Utica,NY) | I'm willing to give Omar Minaya a lot of credit for holding onto Martinez, but I also think there's no need to rush him to find out if he's just Jay Payton or perhaps closer to his top comp (the ubiquitous Bobby Abreu). As a result, I think it does make sense for the Mets to go get an additional outfielder, but that's in part because I wasn't a big Ryan Church fan before his mishaps, and I'm less so now. Filling one outfield corner with "staff" is fine, but both? (Christina Kahrl) |
| 2009-01-07 13:00:00 | Will - how do you go about grading recovery potential from a concussion (or similar) injury? What separated Corey Koskie from Ryan Church? How does Aaron Hill look heading into 2009? Thanks (rawagman from Toronto) | I don't. I'm no doctor and it's a mystery to them why these go the ways they do. There's so many unknowns here. Haven't heard anything on Hill. (Will Carroll) |
| 2008-11-03 13:30:00 | Luis Castillo for Mike Cameron ... allows Weeks to move to CF, gives the Mets another couple of years to find a corner OF ...
(of course, we have to figure out if Daniel Murphy can hack it at 2B this Winter)
(dianagramr from NYC) | Good point, Diane, except that Cameron's not really an asset in a corner. I was sort of counting on Murphy/Tatis to man one corner, and then no rely too heavily on Ryan Church. Obviously, position-relative value-wise, Murphy might make a lovely hitter for a second baseman, but for every Jeff Kent who actually transcended low expectations for his defense, you've got a legion of guys whose glove work doesn't hack it. Castillo might be the lesser evil the Mets just have to endure because, like Schneider, he was more valuable to Omar Minaya than he is to several billion other people. (Christina Kahrl) |
| 2008-08-01 14:00:00 | Any idea why the Mets weren't able to get any of the players they were looking at? (TLivingston from Sonoma, CA) | I don't think the Mets were looking very hard, for better or worse. They seem convinced that Fernando Tatis is for real, that they'll get Ryan Church back at some point, that the rotation will magically hold together despite John Maine's cuff strain, Mike Pelfrey's innings limit, Pedro Martinez's assorted ailments, Oliver Perez's volatility and all that.
I'm not sure I want to bet against all of that by sitting on my hands, but as a team that can afford to take on salary, they have some mobility during the waiver trading period. (Jay Jaffe) |
| 2008-07-21 15:00:00 | I've sent this in a couple chats in a row, but UTK has been crickets regarding Aaron Hill. Have you heard anything about his progress? I read that he's taking fielding drills again. What are your thoughts on how Toronto is handling this? I'd think they are doing the right thing by being so cautious. (Chadale from Toronto) | Couple questions on Hill and Ryan Church, so I'll take on both. There's not much to say on Hill since everything's going slow and until he really starts up the baseball activities, there's nothing for me to add. Same with Church, though there are far more questions (from experts, not from me) on how this was handled. Concussions have no timeline, so don't take my passing on them for lack of interest, but lack of value add. (Will Carroll) |
| 2008-01-25 13:30:00 | Who will have a better year offensively and defensively- Lastings Milledge or Ryan Church? (Kevin from Fairfax VA) | I'll take the upside of Milledge. (Dan Fox) |
