2011 As a starter for the Blue Jays, Chacin was once so popular in Toronto that a local cosmetics company named a cologne after him in 2006. However, the fragrance soon wore off, and Chacin spent all of 2008 and 2009 in the minor leagues before re-emerging in the majors in 2010 as a lefty specialist in the Astros' bullpen. He lacks the stuff to be a starter, as his fastball now tops out at 87 mph. However, his stutter-step delivery and cutter make him tough on left-handed batters, giving him a new lease on a relief career. That career is unlikely to continue with Houston, though, as Chacin was outrighted from the 40-man roster last November.
2010 Soft-tossing Gustavo Chacin’s still trying to find his way back, and hoping Ed Wade gives him a break in Houston this spring.
2008 The charade that Chacin is important to the Jays' rotation should be just about over by now. The soft-tossing lefty maxed out his effort in 2005 by making 34 starts and posting a 3.72 ERA. That he's made just 22 starts around three DL stints, allowed a home run every 4 2/3 innings, and posted a 1.29 K/BB since then is as surprising as a Baseball Prospectus writer starting a simile he can't find an end for. September shoulder surgery is supposed to have him healthy this year, but the best way for the Jays to use him would be to trade him after the first time he goes six innings.
2007 Chacin`s elbow wasn`t right for much of the season. When injury is accompanied by poor performance, there are two ways to look at the problem: `He pitched poorly but he was hurt,` or `he pitched poorly and he was hurt.` In Chacin`s case, we`re inclined toward the latter framing. Relying on a cutter that`s just average and a deceptive delivery, Chacin has little margin for error when it comes to losing anything further off his stuff. When coupled with concerns about his health and his propensity for giving up the longball, that will keep him on a short leash this year.
2006 Chacin`s improvement over the past two seasons is being attributed to the addition of a particularly sharp cut fastball. The most awkward looking delivery this side of late-night Comedy Central stand-up didn`t hurt, either. Still, that kind of shtick doesn`t usually work more than once, leading to speculation that Chacin may struggle in his sophomore season. His peripherals have always been middling at best. Expect to hear the phrase "regression to the mean" a lot, at least from us.
2005 Chacin reached Double-A in 2000, making two starts in the Southern League as a 19-year-old. That was the first of his five seasons at the level; he drifted from prospect to suspect to organization pitcher over the next three years, lacking a third pitch that would help him advance. He added that pitch—a cut fastball—last year, and proceeded to rip off a 34-inning shutout streak, go 16-2 and finally (finally!) get out of the Eastern League.

It's hard to know what to make of Chacin. His performance record, even in his big year, wasn't impressive, and instead of being a fastball/change-up guy, he's now a fastball/cut fastball guy. He doesn't miss enough bats to project as a top starter, and his use of the cutter means he's not suited to be a lefty specialist. He seems suited for a role, swingman, that doesn't really exist. A Chacin/Chad Gaudin fifth starter tandem would be pretty effective.
