2012 Brian Burres has a career 5.75 ERA, a fastball that rarely hits 90 mph, and 106 major league appearances—as if you needed more justification for teaching your kid how to throw lefty.
2011 That Burres spent as much time as he did in the major leagues last season was a sign of the ills that plagued the Pirates' staff. The journeyman didn't pitch well, with awful peripherals and an ugly ERA. Far from overpowering, Burres's fastball rarely surpasses 88 mph. He complements it with a pedestrian curveball, slider, and fastball mix. He is the type of guy a team socks away on its Triple-A roster in case of apocalypse, a term which fairly describes the 2010 Pirates' pitching staff. The Pirates non-tendered Burress in December, content in the knowledge that pitchers with 5.83 career ERAs are more common than ants.
2009 Burres had a couple of good stretches in 2008. One of them was in the spring, when he beat Albers and others out to win the fifth starter's slot, and he then proceeded to dance his way out of trouble through April and May. After that, he was just a disaster; the last 12 games he pitched in were all Oriole losses, and by an average of six runs. There just isn't much margin of error when you're a fly-ball pitcher without overpowering stuff.
2008 Burres was great in April, making him the natural choice to move up when injuries hit the rotation. He pitched decently until July, then the league caught up in a big way. He's an unusual pitcher, with a fairly large fly-ball bias and a severe reverse platoon split. The overall picture looks like a pitcher who will always be in danger of a demotion back to the minor leagues.
2007 Burres was waived by the Giants after 2005, and the Orioles took a chance on him, eventually bringing him up for a September look-see. A lefty medium-tosser, Burres works up in the zone and gets a lot of pop-ups and fly balls, the latter of which tend to leave the yard. The O`s used him as a situational lefty, something his repertoire is not really suited for.
2005 Given a chance to start, the 31st-round community college pick opened some eyes, slashing his walk rate from 5.3 to 2.2 while keeping his strong K and HR rates intact. On the mound he doesn't look like more than a skinny lefty junkballer, but few in the system can match those '04 results. After two seasons in San Jose, we'll know more after his '05 promotion to Double-A.

2009-05-04 14:00:00 (link to chat)Joe, I am shocked that Brian Burres and Bryan Bullington didn't work out.
(JP from Toronto)
Yeah, but you cut bait quickly. That was good. You sure have a lot of pitchers up there. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-04-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)I know it's early but aren't the Jays shooting themselves in the foot by starting Brian Burres when they have Cecil, Mills and Fabio Castro waiting in the minors? I realize the first two aren't lighting the world on fire but does any major league team, let alone one that was in first, have any business giving Burres starts?
(Bill from Toronto)
Agreed 100 percent. If the Blue Jays are serious about making a run this year then they can't be messing around with guys like Brian Burress. Any of the other three would have been better choices, regardless of what they are doing at Las Vegas right now. (John Perrotto)
2008-02-07 14:00:00 (link to chat)First overall pick in 2009? Don't forget about us! If Bedard/Roberts are traded our second best hitter is Luke Scott and our fourth starter is Brian Burres.
(Orioles from Baltimore, MD)
Good point. This could be like the 1979 World Series again. Only the exact opposite. (Joe Sheehan)
