BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2012 Yhency Brazoban resurfaced after a season lost to injury and one bouncing around the minors, striking out 42 batters in 36 1/3 Triple-A frames. The Diamondbacks gave him a look after he requested his release from the Rangers, then kicked off the next leg of his world tour by selling him to the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks in late July.
2011 Advice to fringe pitchers: after missing the better part of three seasons recovering from Tommy John and labrum surgery, don't come to camp looking like you spent the winter sacked out in your beanbag chair eating bagels 'n' schmaltz. Yhency Brazoban's decision to do so earned him a release and a year out of baseball. He pitched his way back in through the Mexican League and the Metsican organization, decent strikeout rates earning a spring training invite from the Rangers.
2009 After Tommy John and labrum surgeries ruined his previous two years, Yhency Brazoban earned a brief return to LA, but pitched less than five innings after a bout of shoulder inflammation; the team's displeasure with his conditioning factored into a decision to non-tender him.
2008 No sooner had Yhency Brazoban returned from Tommy John surgery than he was felled by the torn labrum all too common to post-TJers. He could resurface in the second half of 2008, or he could be finished.
2007 Since coming over in the Kevin Brown-Jeff Weaver deal, the Dodgers have treated this converted outfielder to a workload seemingly designed by Tommy `Torquemada` Lasorda and his pitching coach, the Marquis de Sade. After 152 appearances and 168 2/3 innings at all levels in 2004 and 2005 combined--not to mention a lot of deep counts--the Dodgers allowed Brazoban to throw 27 innings in the Dominican Winter League to aid him in his quest to find a changeup. Soon after reporting to Vero Beach, he developed a sore shoulder, and, during the second week of the season, suffered an avulsion of his UCL--the ligament tore away a fragment of bone. He underwent Tommy John surgery and should be able to participate in spring training, but the odds he`ll ever deliver on the promise that he showed down the stretch in 2004 have gotten longer.
2006 A throw-in on the Brown-Weaver trade, Brazoban seamlessly replaced Guillermo Mota as the top setup man during 2004`s NL West title run. He began 2005 by climbing into the injured Gagne`s closer role without a hitch. `Ghame Over` t-shirts sprouted up, and it was easy to forget the former outfielder had taken up pitching less than three years earlier. But after Gagne broke down for good in mid-June, Brazoban was a disaster. His second stint as closer began with a blown save on June 18 and ended with a blown save on August 10, when he gave up a grand slam to Ryan Howard. During that span he threw 17.2 innings, and pitched like Wayne Franklin in the fifth circle of Hell: 17.2 innings, 22 earned runs, 11 walks, nine strikeouts, five home runs, including two Howard walk-offs. Duaner Sanchez took over the closer duties from there. Mindful of Brazoban`s inexperience, at some point the Dodgers should have put him somewhere he could succeed, be that garbage time in L.A. or closing in the minors. Gagne`s return and the emergence of Sanchez means Brazoban can now earn his way back into the late innings.
2005 Was good enough that he made Guillermo Mota expendable. He pitched exceptionally well until a single outing against the Giants raised his ERA into the "minuscule" range from the "microscopic"" range. Great stuff, can reasonably be expected to be part of a lights-out 8th and 9th inning many, many times this year.
