| 2011-08-17 13:00:00 | Best clubhouse story you couldn't tell until today? (ssimon from Pelham, NY) | I don't really have any good clubhouse stories, partly because the Angels' clubhouse is quite dull and partly because I'm not around the clubhouse more than a couple times a homestand. So I'm going to reprint the greatest clubhouse story ever, from Matt McCarthy's book "Odd Man Out," about his year with the Angels' short-season team. (The book may or may not be true, for what it's worth.)
"An Angels employee briefly interrupted the revelry to bring us fifth leftover hot dogs from the concession stand's Weenie Wednesday promotion. "I took my hot dog over to my locker and began to undress. That was when things got interesting. When I turned around, I saw the dark, naked bodies of two young Dominicans hovering around the hot dogs. Erick Aybar and Alberto Callaspo ... were inseparable and spoke no English -- the most one of them had ever said to me was "Why-ya-ya-ya-ya-yeah!" after I'd pitched a scoreless inning the week before. "Gradually, more of my teammates turned to watch as Aybar's and Callaspo's naked bodies circled the food. We all knew they were up to something no good. Two naked heterosexual teenagers don't stand that close together for that long next to a box of hot dogs without something happening. "Suddenly, Callaspo took one of the hot dogs out of its bun and deep-throated it. Then he took the bun and put it around Aybar's flaccid (etc etc) and poured ketchup on it. Jaws dropped -- Aybar was a willing participant. Then Callaspo bent over and pretended to eat the Dominican (etc etc etc) hot dog. When he did that, we all screamed, "Nooooo!" "Getting the reaction he'd desired, Callaspo turned to a few of us and said, "I no gay. You gay" and burst into a fit of laughter. Callaspo slapped Aybar on the ass and the two laughed all the way to the shower." (Sam Miller) |
| 2011-05-05 13:00:00 | Hi Steven,
With all the buzz about the Mets trading/not trading Reyes, what are the chances that they trade him mid-season and then make a bonafide attempt to sign him in winter? Couldn't that be the best plan to contend from 2012 on? Could you see the Angels parting with Trout for Reyes? (mattstupp from NYC) | That's the million-dollar question, mattstupp. Given the team's financial problems, that kind of circular deal seems unlikely, plus it would possibly cost them a draft choice if they're not protected. With the Angels having Maicer Izturis and Erick Aybar, I don't see them prioritizing Reyes, nor trading the best or second-best prospect in baseball for a free agent to be. (Steven Goldman) |
| 2010-01-26 14:00:00 | Thanks for the answer: would that be someone like Sandoval? How or why does that complicate things for you? (Fred from Jerry Park) | I think Sandoval is a good example. He was basically off my radar screen until he came close to his big league debut. Erick Aybar is another guy I think could be good despite my worries about him. (Tommy Bennett) |
| 2009-10-23 16:00:00 | How would you compare these three middle infielders, Maicer Izturis, Erick Aybar and Yunel Escobar? They all had similar years offensively, but I don't know much about their defense or the chance of stardom. (Wendy from Madrid) | Yunel has the potential to hit 27-32 home runs in a season whereas the other two seem more likely to fall in that .355/.435 range, which is nothing to scoff at, but Yunel certainly has a better chance at becoming an all-star and big bopper than the other two. Defensively, Aybar does a lot right with the glove but makes some mental mistakes that one would hope will gradually cease to occur. I'd order them Escobar, Aybar, Izturis. (Eric Seidman) |
| 2009-10-02 14:00:00 | Are we any closer to getting your picks for surprise stars from each of the playoff teams? (Frank Costanza from Queens) | It's like asking me eight questions at once. Not easy. Brett Gardner. Billy Wagner. Aubrey Huff. Erick Aybar. Chan Ho Park. Colby Rasmus. Hong-Chih Kuo. Dexter Fowler. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2008-11-07 13:00:00 | The Reds need a young shortstop, what you do think it would take to get Erick Aybar from the Angels? (smitty25039 from Charleston) | I don't think much of Aybar. I'd rather see them play Keppinger for a year and see if Valaika can hold on as a shortstop. The consensus is that he can't, but look around the majors and consider the players holding down everyday jobs. I think he'd be average in that pool. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2008-10-07 13:00:00 | If I'm not batting for Erick Aybar close and late, why am I on the post-season roster at all? (Brandon Wood from 3rd fairway) | For the taunting, haunting feeling of what could have been. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2008-08-15 15:00:00 | Can you explain to me why the Angels have handled Brandon Wood the way they have? Calling him up to sit on the bench? Are you at all impressed by his recent lack of Ks? (Gray from Chicago) | I think part of the problem is identifying what Wood is--there was a point when people could reasonable see the new Troy Glaus or something, when we might instead have the new Kelly Gruber or, if he stays at short, Jose Hernandez. That's a much different proposition, especially on a team that these days is far more easily impressed by the slappy aggression and basepaths violence of an Erick Aybar. A long swing is a terrible thing to have on the bench, though, since it's almost certain to go stale; if Wood's going to be up, he needs to play, and if avoiding strikeouts for some short stretch is the only way for him to get Mickey Hatcher's imprimatur, so be it. (Christina Kahrl) |
| 2008-07-22 13:00:00 | Ben Revere is fun to watch here in Beloit, but is his game going to translate to the upper levels? (jlebeck66 from WI) | I really think it is. That guy can just plain hit, and if you've seen him (I see you are in Wisconsin, so I hope you have), you know that he's just not some tiny slap hitter, he drives the ball and gets leverage in a way that kind of reminds me of Erick Aybar. | 2008-07-07 13:00:00 | More impressive about Ben Revere...hitting over .400 or that he is 2nd in the midwest league in SLG? Think he can maintain excellent 2B and 3B power as he advances? (Norville Barnes from Muncie, IN) | I do. He's really interesting to watch because he's so small, but on a power level, he kind of reminds me of Erick Aybar where the bat is so fast that he can drive them into the gaps and you're really surprised to see the ball hit so hard -- he's legit. | 2008-02-05 13:00:00 | Ah, I see the Worldwide Leader in Sports has box scores. I completely missed those before. Quick perusal shows no Pie though. Is he out? Struggling mightily? (Brian Gallagher from Evanston, Illinois) | First on Pie: he was on the Dominican Winter League playoff roster, but was seldom in evidence; he's not on the Caribbean Series, by choice or lack of invitation, it's not clear. I don't know why he got buried, but it happened prior to Hector de la Cruz taking over as manager (which happened in the middle of the Dominican League finals). Another guy who was in a similar situation was Anderson Hernandez, who's been pressed into service by Erick Aybar's absence, and has been sterling. (Derek Jacques) |

| 2009-10-16 13:00:00 | NLCS Game Two/ALCS Game One | Erick Aybar's listed 5'10" seems a bit generous. (Steven Goldman) |
