2013 A minor-league free agent, Atchison re-signed with Boston both because of opportunity in the bullpen and Massachusetts General Hospital. You see, Atchisonís daughter suffers from a rare condition called thrombocytopenia-absent radius (TAR), marked by an absence of radius bones (one of two bones in your forearm, but you knew that). The former 49th-round pick was surprisingly effective, finishing fourth on the team in pWARP, a comment both on how good Atchison was and on how bad everyone else was. He doesnít wow you with stuff and was a bit hit-lucky, but he avoids walks and keeps the ball in the park. Despite missing two months with a UCL sprain (he returned in mid-September to throw 5 1/3 scoreless), Atchison is likely to land in Bostonís bullpen again in 2013.
2012 Atchison was out of place in the 2010 bullpen. He is best suited to a mop-up role or as a long man who can soak up innings, but instead was considered the team's top middle reliever simply because everyone else failed. This past year was more his speed, as he split time between Pawtucket and Boston, throwing strike after strike resulting in lots of contact outs and few walks. In 2010, that meant tons of homers, but he got away souvenir-free this time. The Red Sox declined his option but kept him on the 40-man in order to house him in Triple-A to begin the year. Atchison has his uses, just bear in mind his limitations.
2011 The pitcher that defined the Red Sox bullpen best in 2010 was Atchison, who performed nearly as close to replacement level as one can get. He made 43 appearances and logged 60 innings only because there was no one else around to take them who could avoid regular embarrassment on the mound. The right-hander works with a fastball/slider combo and below-average strikeout rates, but he can get his pitches over the plate on a consistent basis. Atchison's home-run rates suggest that his control isn't always a positive, but Boston picked up his 2011 option anyway.
2006 One of several pitchers pushing thirty who`ve recently cracked the majors for the first time and done well in Seattle. After a strong 2004, Atchison managed just 23.1 innings at three levels in 2005 due to a strained elbow. He`s expected to be healthy in 2006, and will battle for a bullpen spot. The Mariner pen was cheap and modestly effective last year; it will remain cheap but possibly emerge as a Top 10 MLB ensemble if Atchison, Rafael Soriano, and others stay healthy.
2005 Atchison is the new Ryan Franklin, which is nice if he's cheap. The Mariners signed Franklin to an expensive deal when they had a reasonable facsimile right there. Atchison will be in the bullpen in '05, where he's well-suited for long relief. Good peripherals.

2011-01-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)What does Matt Albers have to show in order to make the Red Sox roster as a reliever out of spring training?
(dawson950 from cape cod)
Hey, if the Sox are going to pick up Scott Atchison's option and give him a shot, the bar isn't set that high. He just has to not suck, and hope none of the other guys who are fighting for one of the last bullpen spots puts up big spring numbers or an impressive new pitch. (Marc Normandin)
2009-12-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)I've heard that Colby Lewis has returned from Japan. Think anyone picks him up?
(Ira from North Texas)
Maybe; it's not quite like my flying to Europe and telling the Bundesliga I'm available, after all. But he's 30, and he's gotten mauled in the majors. I'd take the suggestion made by Scott Atchison's similar return, and the barely-above-minimum deal that he got from Boston. (Christina Kahrl)
