2013 Non-tendered after a brutal year, Manny Acosta signed with the Yomiuri Giants in Japan.
2012 He's been released by the Yankees, waived by the Braves, yet he's turned into the kind of reliever who can pitch in the late innings for a second-division team, which is exactly what he did in 2011. With a 94-96 mph fastball, Acosta has a true plus big-league heater. His slider is solid and he generally throws strikes. There is no reason to think he's going to get much better, but he is certainly much better than your standard guy whom two teams have given up on.
2011 Acosta has been inconsistent throughout his career; sometimes his stuff dominates the opposition, and at other times the Panamanian can't hit the broad side of his homeland's eponymous canal. As a result, he started the season in Triple-A before heeding a call to the majors, where he struck out 9.5 per nine with a sub-three ERA. Unintentionally walking just 3.9 batters per nine qualified as a major accomplishment for the righty, but as long as he can punch out more than twice as many hitters as he lets trot to first, his power fastball will play as a weapon in relief even if he can't be trusted in high-leverage situations. Fortunately for Acosta, there will be ample middle-relief innings to soak up before the set-up crew takes the mound.
2010 Acosta is one of those guys who drives scouts insane, so we're guessing he has the same effect on the Braves. See him on the right night and he'll blow hitters away with a mid-90s fastball than gets up to 98 mph, a pretty nice splitter, and a plus slider. Unfortunately, he's so inconsistent from outing to outing, especially when it comes to location, that it's impossible to trust him late in games. So, Acosta is one of those guys, someone who could move to three or four more teams and then finally figure things out and save 30 games five years from now... or he could just be out of baseball by then.
2009 A skinny Panamanian out of the Yankees system, Acosta got a shot at closing during Rafael Soriano’s early-season stints on the disabled list. Acosta had a 1.61 ERA and allowed just one inherited runner to score in April and May, but was awful in June and tore his right hamstring in early July, resulting in a seven-week stay on the DL. Acosta made just five appearances for the Braves after his late-August return but with his high-90s heat could emerge as a valuable late-inning reliever for them in 2009.
2008 This rail-thin Panamanian was one of many Richmond Braves to come up and support a tiring bullpen late in the season. Credit the Braves for picking up a castoff from the Yankees' system-Acosta was signed by the Yanks at 16-and slowly turning him into a useful bullpen arm. Persistent command problems plague him, but as a $400,000 solution in the seventh inning, he'll do nicely.
