BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2012 After inking a minor league deal with the A's in the off-season and posting a 3.53 ERA at Triple-A, Eyre opted out of his deal to sign with the Orioles in August, who recalled him after just 3.1 innings with their own Triple-A affiliate. He throws a 92-mph fastball that he can cut, and a breaking call somewhere between a curve and a slider. The 32-year-old Eyre proved marginally effective with a 4.17 FIP, but there's really nothing special about him.
2010 Middle reliever Willie Eyre came back from 2008 Tommy John surgery, but a groin injury contributed to his being crowded out of the pen picture repeatedly.
2009 After losing all of 2008 recuperating from a Tommy John surgery, Willie Eyre will be coming to camp hoping to reclaim his utility pitcher spot; although he got hammered in the AFL, he did strike out 33 in 26 1/3 IP.
2008 Willie Eyre didn't pitch well enough in his rookie year of 2006 to justify another turn in the majors, but he made the Rangers' roster anyway, didn't especially pitch well again, then went down with Tommy John surgery in late August. He'll likely miss all of 2008
2007 After toiling away as just another organizational arm for seven years, Scott`s younger brother got hot at the right time--spring training--and broke camp with the big league club. He somehow stayed in the bigs all year as the last arm out of the bullpen despite pitching well enough to get released when the season was over. He`ll now try to earn a similar job with the Rangers.
2006 Welcome to life in the Twins organization: Eyre isn`t a bad prospect, but he isn`t an exceptional one in a system replete with that sort. So what to do? Put him in the pen, and have a quality, homegrown reliever, naturally. He had a significant reverse platoon split in Rochester, which suggests that his breaking stuff doesn`t have enough wiggle to keep right-handed hitters from sitting on his fastball. Whether or not that keeps him in the International League for another go-round will have to be seen, but for everybody else, he`s worth getting as a throw-in on a deal.
2005 Eyre tends to get overlooked amidst the cornucopia of live arms in the organization, but he's done one thing that separates a lot of talents from their destiny: He's remained healthy. Having put up a solid season at Rochester, he's earned some consideration. He's struggled with command of his fastball, but seems to have tackled the problem. From the trio of reliable starters at Rochester last year, he's the homegrown product, but probably ranks behind Guerrier and Gassner internally, his lukewarm strikeout rates holding him back.
