2008 Once a top prospect, Durbin's profile had fallen by the start of the 2007 season to the point at which he was worth a waiver flier but not the resulting roster spot. The property of four teams over the span of about three weeks, Durbin was waived by the Twins at the end of spring training, then claimed and designated for assignment in quick succession by the D'backs, Red Sox, and Phillies. The game could have gone on indefinitely, but by the time the Phillies DFA'd J.D., the list of intrigued general managers had finally been exhausted. With the Phils' rotation in disarray in June, the whirling Durbin spun again and landed in the Show. He had four quality starts in his first seven tries, including a shutout in San Diego, but a 20.25 ERA in three September starts put an end to the experiment. Durbin is young enough that there is still some hope for him, especially if he can trim his walk rate.
2007 Earlier in the decade, Durbin was one of the system`s shining stars, but shoulder surgery and arm soreness have prevented him from throwing more than 110 innings in any of the last three seasons. It`s a shame, because he`s still pretty good. Durbin still throws hard, his curveball has blossomed into a true big league offering, and his bulldog demeanor is the kind of thing scouts love, but his control has gone backwards, and that pesky annual trip to the disabled list keeps holding him back. Durbin is in line for a fourth year at Triple-A, but could fill in as a starter or reliever should the need arise.
2006 `Maybe` is a dirty word where young pitchers are concerned, but after another injury-riddled season, what is it that Durbin is about to become? Maybe a hell of a pitcher; anybody who throws a moving 95 mph heater and a slurve as nasty as his gets people excited. But maybe he`ll just stay a `maybe,` because as long as he has trouble staying on the mound or throwing strikes, it`s hard to really consider him a prospect. He lost six weeks in the second half to lingering shoulder tendinitis after having his labrum repaired the year before, although he was back on the mound at season`s end. There`s still the question of whether he`s going to master changing speeds or get his breaking stuff over for strikes often enough, especially against lefties. Throw concerns about his durability into the mix, and a move to the pen might be the best outcome for all concerned.
2005 Surgery to repair a torn labrum and clean up his rotator cuff and biceps cost him six weeks in the first half. That doesn't like much considering so many different areas needed work, but Durbin's mechanics are a bit of an adventure. For now, he's got a hard slurve and high-90s heat, which sounds nice enough to start off with, but he also has a funky change he grips differently, wrapping his pinky around the bottom of the ball; the digit apparently has an unusual range of motion since being broken. He'll contend for a job at the bottom of either the rotation or the pen, but the mechanics are enough of a concern to raise a caution flag.
