YearComment
2010 A former top prospect who has washed out, the White Sox gave Jimmy Gobble a brief look in '09 before giving up on him as others have before.
2009 After finally showing promise as a reliever in 2007, Gobble was gobbled up by hitters last year. His numbers look especially gruesome because of a historic 10-run top of the eighth against Detroit on July 21; no reliever in more than a half-century (at least) had ever before given up 10 runs while working an inning or less. Afterward, Gobble went on the DL with a bruised ego (and stiff back), but was able to salvage some pride by throwing seven scoreless September innings. Gobble is still an attractive option against lefties—he dropped his arm slot in 2007, and last year held his own kind to a 569 OPS in 69 PAs. Don't read on if you're faint of heart: righties hit .382/.517/.676 in 89 PA. Consequently, he'll be the resident LOOGY this year.
2008 Washed out left-handed starting pitchers need not distress, there's always room for a LOOGY. After toying with a sidearm delivery in the spring, Gobble started to mix it in against left-handers in game-situations in May and June, corresponding to an improvement in his strikeout-to-walk ratio (1.22 before May 20th, 2.79 afterwards.) Still, Gobble was not quite as effective in that role last year as his ERA suggests; he allowed eight more inherited runners to score than would have been expected. LOOGY may not be a glamorous role, but Gobble has as much job security as anyone on the team.
2007 Ladies and gentlemen, your strikeout leader for the 2006 Kansas City Royals! Gobble led the team with 80?eighty, eight zero, ochenta (ocho cero if you`re Chad Johnson). Since 1960, only three staff leaders have had a lower strikeout total in a non-strike season: Paul Splittorff with 61 for the 1983 Royals, Scott Schoeneweis with 78 for the 2000 Angels, and Carlos Reyes with 78 for the 1996 As. Gobble`s strikeout rate last season (8.54 K/9) was more than double his previous career average (4.18) as the move to the bullpen added some life to his fastball, which, in turn, made his curveball more effective. A future as an effective, if homer-prone, lefty in the Jamie Walker mold is his upside.
2006 His strikeout rate more than doubled from 2004, but he still gave up a homer every six innings and his walk rate jumped to more than one every other inning. Take`n rake works for hitters. The same approach on the mound--nibble and hang?--does not. Gobble was supposed to thrive in the bullpen, but his ERA was 6.19 in relief, 4.67 in the rotation. The Royals` approach to building a pitching staff has been to load up on flyball pitchers with average velocity. Can`t understand why that didn`t work.
2005 Gobble made 24 starts last season, and struck out five batters in exactly one of them. He became only the third pitcher in the last decade to throw 130+ innings and strike out less than three batters per nine innings. All the moxie and control in the world won't make up for asking your defense to make 24 outs a game. Gobble's problem is the same one that derailed George's career: He suddenly lost a few mph on his fastball last season. His prospects for recovery are better, owing to a good curve and better control, but there's a sizable gap between "better than Chris George" and "serviceable major league pitcher."

PITCHf/x Pitcher Profile

A Collaboration between BrooksBaseball.net and Baseball Prospectus - Pitch classifications provided by Pitch Info LLC
