2013 Perhaps Nix could be Mayberry’s platoon partner. Nix has developed into a worthwhile league-average part-timer outfielder against right-handers over the last four years, bringing some useful power for an average of about 250 plate appearances per year. Last year was his least productively offensively, but it was also his smallest sample. Teams have learned how to deploy Nix. It's just a matter of finding his platoon partner—and Mayberry seems like an excellent candidate.
2012 The good news is that Nix is another solid power bat off the bench. The bad is news is that he’s just as left-handed as the Phillies’ other lefty bench options, most notably Jim Thome and Jack Cust. Nix was able to hack it as a platoon starter on the second-division Nationals, but he and his .288 career on-base percentage leave a lot of outs in the middle of the lineup. The Phillies managed to be about league average in that department last year, but 300 plate appearances of Laynce Nix might hurt their chances for a repeat.
2011 Nix should never be allowed to attempt to hit left-handed pitching. Like most of his previous employers, the Reds received that memo and weren’t tempted to dismiss it despite the outfielder’s small-sample 5-for-16 “breakout” against southpaws last season. Overall, his offensive production can’t be described as much more than adequate for a corner bat, given that NL left fielders batted .267/.337/.434 as a group, and most of them didn’t get to hit in Great American Ball Park or hog a roster spot in exchange for under 200 platoon-advantaged plate appearances. Nix is a major defensive asset in left, which helped the Reds reduce the fallout from Jonny Gomes’ radioactive glove. In fact, that Gomes was ever allowed to start over Nix against a righty makes about as much sense as a Charlie Kaufman screenplay.
2010 Another member of the Reds “Power, but...” team, Nix played in just 39 major-league games from 2006 to 2008 after falling out of favor in Texas. Like his compadres in the Queen City, he won’t walk, doesn’t hit for average, and can’t touch same-handed pitching (.179/.220/.263 against lefties in his big-league career, albeit in just 166 PAs), but he’s a valuable defender capable of making positive contributions in all three pastures. So why was Nix designated for assignment instead of his short-sided platoon partner, Gomes? These are the mysteries of Cincinnati Reds baseball.
2009 Bypassed during Cameron’s suspension, Laynce Nix was consigned to Nashville for almost the entire season, where he demonstrated his usual blend—some power, but only a dash of plate discipline, contact woes aplenty, and defense that may be slipping.
2008 After missing the first six weeks of the 2007 season with an oblique strain, Laynce Nix hit for plenty of power at Nashville, but continued to show the lackluster plate discipline that has limited him to the Quadruple-A realm. He also comes up six points shy of "Callix Crabbe" as a Scrabble score.
2007 Nix didn`t play past September 4 after succumbing to turf toe and undergoing surgery. He claimed the toe had been bothering him for two years, which was probably meant to help explain his stalled development; the problem is that he`s been stagnating for four years, not just two. He is what he is at this point, but he has a shot at winning the center field job, if only because the team might mistake spring performance for a less likely turnaround.
2006 Nix`s 2004 shoulder injury finally required surgery, shutting him down in late July. His performance in the majors has been terrible, but that`s not necessarily a reflection of his talent. He was rushed in 2003, and while it`s up for debate whether skipping levels inhibits development, hitting with a bum shoulder for over a year wasn`t going to help. At this point, there`s still room for optimism, but he`ll have to stay healthy, recover the plate discipline he showed in the minors and demonstrate some ability to hit lefties to be a regular. It`s a tall order.
2005 Didn't perform well, and suffered a shoulder injury mid-season. Like most of the Ranger regulars, Nix's production wasn't good in the second half. Unfortunately, he was also bad in the first half. He was completely lost against lefties, hitting only .176 against them. Since the Rangers were nominally in the hunt, Nix's playing time slowly went away, as Showalter had to try a run for the pennant. Nix's future isn't certain; he's still a prospect to be a very good ballplayer, but with the acquisition of Hidalgo, there's a potentially packed outfield situation which could cut his PT dramatically.

Whoops. Sorry about that. I still call it "Shea," too, and often talk about Yankee prospects at Columbus.

I wouldn't trade for a 3B. The guy you get might be a win better than Encarnacion over three months, and he could just as easily be two wins' worse. Maybe that's being optimistic about a disappointing player. The Reds would be better served looking for an OBP source in the outfield, where Willy Taveras and Laynce Nix are killing them. (Is Taveras still trying to steal 100 bases? He has some ground to make up.) (Joe Sheehan)
2008-10-24 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Jay, wondering if you think there's any chance Laynce Nix turns into a serviceable 4th of?
(doughowgate from Boston)
Man, this one is out of left field. I'd say the chances are slim to none. Nix has gotten just 91 at-bats over the last three years, his Age 25-27 seasons, and has 12 hits, just three for extra bases. His career line is now .235/.272/.401. he's got a bit of pop and can play defense but his plate disicpline is atrocious (6-to-1 K/BB ratio).

The Brewers view him as organizational fodder, and quite rightly I think. He's a warm body to stick out there for a day or two until a more sufficient reserve can be located. (Jay Jaffe)
