BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 A versatile bench player who can handle any of the four corner positions but is miscast as an everyday third baseman, Dobbs was exposed when pressed into regular duty by the rash of injuries that struck the Marlins roster. He started 97 games, 52 of them in the five- or six-hole of Ozzie Guillen’s batting order—where his .255 TAv sagged the team’s run output—and 30 of them at the hot corner, where his -5.6 FRAA was detrimental to Miami's pitchers. The two-year deal Dobbs signed last January guarantees him a spot on the 2013 bench, and he may again find more playing time than the Marlins would like.
2012 Dobbs agreed to a minor-league deal with the Marlins just before the start of spring training, but by the second week of the season had emerged as the team's starting third baseman. His minimal contributions at the plate were offset by subpar defense at the hot corner, where he finished with a -10.7 FRAA in 755 innings. Dobbs may have added a few more years to his career, however, with a return to pinch-hitting prowess, batting .370 off the bench after combining for a .146 average in 103 pinch-hit at-bats the previous two years in Philadelphia.
2011 Greg Dobbs hit rock bottom in 2010 and was ineffective no matter where he played. The former ace pinch-hitter has gone 15-for-109 in that role over the last two seasons. His career may be over.
2010 Dobbs battled injuries in 2009, but that probably had less to do with his failings than the general difficulty of sustaining success in the pinch-hitter role. Praised as an elite substitute-swinger after pinch-hitting .355 in 2008, Dobbs suffered the reminder that pinch-hitting success is not a persistent skill, even for those good at it, and slumped to .167. Consider, the man pinch-hit 60 times last year; that's 10 times a month. Enough luck goes into the small number of opportunities that pinch-hitters receive that Dobbs could easily rebound or get even worse. The addition of Ross Gload as another lefty bat bench doesn't help, but Placido Polanco's addition at third means there might be a few spot starts for lefty sock to help Dobbs' bat fresh.
2009 Dobbs has a pretty limited skill set—hitting right-handed pitchers for some average and power, surviving at third base—but it fits well on this Phillies’ roster, enabling them to balance a bottom of the lineup that would list badly to the right otherwise. If you think pinch-hitting is a skill distinct from hitting, Dobbs’ .314/.360/.526 career line in that role is impressive as well. He could do this for a while.
2008 Dobbs has some legitimate value as a pinch-hitter, having hit .292/.350/.528 in 100 career pinch-hit plate appearances. He did fairly well pinch-hitting and spot starting in the first half of last year, but when Wes Helms proved once again that he's best suited to a bench role, Dobbs began to slip into the lineup more and more often. By season's end, Dobbs had started more games at third base (57) than either Helms (53) or Abraham Nu?ez (51), but he too was exposed as a starter, both offensively and defensively, and hit just .253/.339/.364 in the second half. Given the alternatives, the Phillies picked the right man. That was resourcefulness; going into the 2008 season with the same options is negligence.
2007 Cornerman Greg Dobbs`s qualifications for a major league job all come down to one thing: `Bats left-handed,` and not well enough at that.
2005 His promotion was a reward for the good year they thought he had in Tacoma. No, really, that's what they said. Dobbs is a defensively limited Bloomquist. Until they can look at these guys without cartoon hearts throbbing in their eyes, the organization's in trouble.

2009-10-13 14:00:00 (link to chat)A lot is said of hitter's going to Philly and getting better because of the park and potent lineup, but isn't that doing a disservice to Charlie and Milt. They have taken and converted more reclamation project hitters then any team I can think of.
(faithdies from DE)
Indeed. Jayson Werth was a stathead fave for years, going back to his days behind the plate. Shane Victorino's someone they should feel good about as well. They found a way to use Greg Dobbs, which might be the first and last time that happens. Manuel's rep with hitters seems well deserved. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-10-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on Jason Donald at 3B in the AFL? Can he be a similar offensive hitter to Pedroia in the bigs, but at 3B? Obviously you'd like more power at 3B, but the Phillies did play Pedro Feliz and Greg Dobbs there this year, and Wes Helms last year....
(JM from DC)
Um, no. I don't think I'm going out on a limb here when I say that Jason Donald is not going to be the kind of guy who gives you 322 total bases in a season. He's a nice little prospect, but not a true SS, and not a guy who's in Pedroia's league offensively. (Kevin Goldstein)

2010-10-06 10:00:002010 Playoffs Day OneColin, I think the decision to start Valdez was one of necessity as much as anything else. The alternative, to start Greg Dobbs, isn't much better. (Tommy Bennett)
