2008 Mike Wood is no more than an extra arm, a crafty right-hander who doesn't have much in the way of stuff, but throws strikes and changes speed well. He refused an outright assignment in December and later signed with the Yomiuri Giants. Sayonara, zetsub? sensei!
2007 Finesse right-hander Mike Wood is effective when he has pinpoint control and gets hammered when he doesn`t. A back injury last summer didn`t help; he`s an NRI with the Rangers.
2006 It`s well-known that win-loss records can be deceiving, but so can ERAs. Wood`s ERA dropped nearly a run and a half last season, even though opposing hitters did better (.287/.367/.484) than they did in 2004 (.286/.342/.491). The explanation is Wood`s performance with runners in scoring position. In 2004, they hit .345/.392/.736; last year, it was .214/.329/.328. No Royal gets more out of his stuff than Wood, but his stuff just isn`t that special. His walk rate spiked last year, which is a problem. No pitcher gets enough groundballs to get away with surrendering nearly 15 baserunners per nine innings.
2005 The third player in the Beltran deal is the classic third fiddle, a low-upside innings sponge that couldn't crack the A's rotation but was ready to pitch in the major leagues. Wood is the pitching equivalent of a secondary skills hitter, a pitcher who takes walks and homers off the board so he can be successful even if hitters bat .290 against him. His control came with him to Kansas City, but his sinker was lost in transition, as he surrendered a homer nearly every six innings. Wood's name rarely comes up when the Royals' projected rotation is brought up, but if his ERA had matched his PERA last season, people might see him for the league-average starter that he is.
