BP Chats

DateQuestionAnswer
2010-01-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you stil consider Billy Beane and Mark Shapiro to be Top 5 GM's, or have the past couple of seasons changed the way you view both GMs's?
(Ron from Vancouver)
I've never been as high on either of them as certain readers would like to believe, and I'm certainly not very sold on the job that either of them has done in recent years. Beane wasted a whole lot of time and money on Bobby Crosby, and the Indians' talent pipeline on Shapiro's watch hasn't impressed me, though I think he's done well in some of his trades. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-12-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)Please help me understand: the A's finally got out from under the Bobby Crosby contract, only to take on Aaron Miles?? Any chance Miles can be a useful bench player?
(Drew W from NoVA)
No. Wow, I feel like Calvin Coolidge or something, except that I just that I feel like Calvin Coolidge or something. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-04-10 16:30:00 (link to chat)Bobby Crosby saw some time in right field two nights ago. Shouldn't the A's just "Sheffield" him and find a better utility player?
(dwiest12 from NoVa)
I do wonder about that, but if he hits well enough to have some value, I can see his having a Bill Almon-style second act. A goodly number of utility men were ex-shortstops, after all; they weren't all second basemen who weren't good enough to start at second. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-01-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do you make of Matt Holliday's comments about Bobby Crosby swinging the bat well after work out with Mark McGwire? Do the A's still bring in Cabrera (costing them a 2nd round pick) or just go with some combination of Crosby, Pennington, and Petit?
(Dave from Chicago)
I'll believe it when I see it. That's not to say I don't trust Holliday, it's just that you hear those kinds of stories all the time, and people seem to still be willing to give Crosby the benefit of the doubt.

I don't think Cabrera is worth the pick. Maybe the A's should just call the Cubs, and send over one of their non-prospects in exchange for another middle infielder they don't want to use. (Marc Normandin)
2008-12-11 14:00:00 (link to chat)Beyond the fact that he isn't very good... Would it be a smart bet for Billy Beane to trade Bobby Crosby to a potential Furcal suitor just to shrink the market for him? The A's can't outbid anybody who might want Furcal, so shouldn't they want to be the only ones bidding? Then even if they don't sign Furcal, I don't really see some kind of a Gregorio Petit, Pennington, Mark Ellis as a downgrade at all. At least there's SOME defense, power and obp in that group, albeit not in the same place.
(Juan Eduardo from San Francisco)
My problem with that is I don't think there is much of a market for Bobby Crosby. His value is lower than ever. It's a good idea in theory but I think it would be hard to execute. (John Perrotto)
2008-12-05 14:00:00 (link to chat)How concerned should A's fans be about signing Rafael Furcal to something like a 4-year deal worth $48 million, or something like that? Besides the fact that he hasn't had a healthy and productive season since 2006, the A's would also be getting his age 31 through 34 seasons. Surely better than Bobby Crosby (and anything on the farm), but seems like this potential signing would have a lot of risk.
(Dave from Chicago)
Agree completely. Furcal is high-risk, high-reward, but when it comes to the first half of the equation, tThe A's have an awful track record in assessing risk when it comes to player health, and perhaps in their health department entirely. Crosby, Chavez, Harden, Mulder... if they bite on Furcal, it's got the potential to blow up in their faces several times over. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-11-12 14:00:00 (link to chat)Can Cardenas play an adequate enough shortstop to be an upgrade to the Bobby Crosby disaster?
(Adam from Italy)
I don't see it. I think the only tool he has that works on the left side of the infield is the arm. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-10-24 14:00:00 (link to chat)After multiple major surgeries, what kind of production should we expect from Eric Chavez next season and beyond?
(Dave from Chicago)
I've always viewed the litanies of injuries of both Chavez and Bobby Crosby as enough for the A's to move strongly towards Plan B options at both positions; that they haven't remains one of Billy Beane's biggest shortcomings. I expect nothing from them, and I think the A's might eventually come around to the idea that Jack Hanahan and Donnie Murphy aren't gonna cut it. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-05-30 13:00:00 (link to chat)With Keppinger on the DL, I was forced to pickup a backup in Barmes. Now he's on the DL and I picked up Vazquez. My OF is pretty deep (Milton Bradley, Fukudome, Bruce, Pence and Chris Young.) Would you actively shop any or all of these guys for a SS in the meantime (or longterm) or wait it out with Vazquez or a Jack Wilson or a Bobby Crosby on the waiver wire until Keppinger comes back?
(jnelson33 from Pennsauken)
Wait it out. SS isn't a deep at all, so the price of admission is too high for my tastes. I'm just floating through SS as they are hot myself. (Marc Normandin)
2008-04-25 15:00:00 (link to chat)Could the A's conceivably win the AL West with 85 wins or so or do the Angels pull away once they get healthy (since we know Rich Harden won't!)?
(Dave from Chicago)
Right now this is looking as though it might be your typical two-team AL West battle as it's been for most of the past few years. The A's appear to be playing above their heads, but it shouldn't be all that shocking that a few things have gone especially right given the bad luck that's befallen this team in recent years, things like Bobby Crosby's health and Dana Eveland's ability to pitch at a major league level. I think a lot depends on whether John Lackey can be John Lackey when he gets back, and how well guys like Harden and Duchscherer can withstand regular turns in the rotation. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-03-18 17:00:00 (link to chat)Let's say hypothetically Bobby Crosby plays in 140+ games....more specifically, a healthy 140+ games. What kind of numbers can he post at this stage?
(ashitaka from long beach, ca)
I think a healthy Crosby is a league average hitter -- just like he was in his one full season back in 2004. A shortstop who hits league average is more valuable than a first baseman who does, of course, so this is sort of a compliment. (Jim Baker)

2008-03-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)I've seen some projections that suggest it's the A's who are in the best position to take advantage of a stumble from Anahiem than the Mariners are. First, how credible is that? And second, if that is credible, how much worse does that make Bavasi's win-now plan?
(Evan from Vancouver, BC)
I don't see this at all. The A's are in full-on rebuilding mode, and behind Joe Blanton they need a lot to hope that Rich Harden, Justin Duchscherer, and Chad Gaudin are healthy. Add to that the need for sick-noters like Eric Chavez and Bobby Crosby to bounce back and I think we're at the point where it's far more likely Blanton gets shipped out at the deadline than the A's contend.

I'm not about to defend Bavasi, but I don't see the M's overtaken by Oakland this year. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-02-07 14:00:00 (link to chat)At this point in his career, is it reasonable to expect a healthy Bobby Crosby to be league-average?
(Drew W from Vienna VA)
He has about a .220 EqA in his last 750 or so PAs, and he's 28 years old. I think you can expect .245 and hope for .260. Unless his defense is great--it hasn't been--that's just a guy. He's someone to trade the second he picks up some trade value. (Joe Sheehan)
