YearComment
2014 He's the organization's backup Jeff Mathis, but Koyie Hill has now been worth -2.1 WARP for his career and doesn't have anywhere near the defensive acumen to forgive a sub-.400 OPS the past two seasons.
2012 In last year's edition, Hill was reported as having the sixth-worst season in the Retrosheet-era database among those with 200 PA in a season. This is significant only because he was actually worse in 2011 (by TAv), though with Geovany Soto not missing as much time, he didn't get 200 PA. He has a good reputation as a defender and play-caller, but the metrics haven't backed that up: He's thrown out just 21 percent over the past two seasons while allowing 38 wild pitches plus passed balls in just 894 1/3 innings of work.
2011 On the list of offensive seasons delivered by a switch-hitting catcher, Hill's 2010 was the sixth-worst in the Retrosheet-era database among those with 200 PAs in a season, behind Alan Ashby's '79, Buck Rodgers' '68, Rick Sweet's '83, and Matt Walbeck's '94 and '96 campaigns. Sweet and Rodgers were done, but Ashby and Walbeck had long years ahead of them, so not even this level of failure guarantees future flailing. In the end, if a dude can catch, people will call, and Hill can catch. In a perfect world, he'd be paired up with someone who can handle 120 starts, but Soto hasn't gotten there in either of the last two seasons.
2010 When Geovany Soto went down with a torn oblique in early July, Hill moved into the starting lineup and worked without a net, starting 28 straight games—including both ends of a doubleheader before the All-Star break—and working all but three innings behind the plate until Soto returned. It was a display of rugged backstoppery that, added to his earlier rehab from a table saw mishap which resulted in the severing and reattachment of several digits, give him ample bragging rights at future lodge meetings of the International Brotherhood of Backup Catchers. His bat has less interesting things to say, and while his defense and ability to switch-flail will keep him on the roster, his best offensive seasons will be no better than Soto’s worst.
2009 With very little fanfare, Koyie Hill came back from an off-season accident with a table saw in which he severed four fingers from his right hand; with the fingers re-attached, he shook off assertions he'd never again play, hit more than well enough, and now stands a decent chance at backing up Soto behind the plate.
2008 Koyie Hill took advantage of the Cubs' revolving door at catcher last year to record his longest stint as a big-leaguer, but didn't do himself any favors by posting a .174 EqA. As a backup catcher, he's neither any better nor any worse than most of the scrubs in the league.
2006 He has yet to translate his acceptable minor league walk rate into something more like a career, and it doesn`t look like he will. He put up okay numbers by admittedly pathetic D-Back catcher standards while regrouping in Triple-A after an abysmal start. If he was unable to push Chris Snyder`s .202/.297/.301 line out of the everyday lineup, he`s no longer a prospect.
2005 Did he just pull it all together? Solid defensive catcher, shows occasional flashes of all the tools in previous years; average one year, power the next, plate discipline, then has a pretty good consolidation season at Las Vegas, and gets a taste of the bigs. With Hammock's knee a concern, he'll compete with the more talented but less proven Chris Snyder for the #1 job.
2004 Hill's plate discipline deteriorated into nothing in 2003 (we suspect you're detecting a theme), and his status as a prospect is likely to follow if he doesn't get himself back on track. Hill hit an empty .314 in the hitter's haven of Las Vegas, with precious little power. A converted third baseman out of Wichita State, he has been known to show good opposite-field power, but it seems unlikely that his bat will be taking him to stardom anytime soon. The organization loves his defense, and will probably start using him as a backup by 2005.

2010-06-23 19:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Colin! Is Starlin Castro going to be the first homegrown legitimate star position player for the Cubs since Appetite for Destruction was topping the charts?
(David Geiser from State College, PA)
He has a real chance at being the first one that isn't for some baffling reason stuck being the short side of a platoon with Koyie Hill. (Colin Wyers)
2010-06-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)In an OPB/holds redraft league, would you drop Frank Fransisco for Soto or Gavin Floyd? I have McCann, but having Soto for off days could be groovy.
(Will from Mactaquac)
Isn't there some Koyie Hill drama going on in Chicago right now, or did Sweet Lou already drop that BS and put Soto back where he belongs? (Marc Normandin)
2009-09-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Speaking of Soto, is this year just a "sophomore slump" or is really just a kind of fat, one year wonder?
(Justin from Normal, IL)
It's really perplexing. When Koyie Hill is a better alternative than anyone you know you have a problem. A lot of people immediately point to his .245 BABIP, but I'm not willing to simply assume that regresses to .330 anything like that. He might be hitting the ball with less force given that his plate discipline data actually portends positive results with a lower swing rate and higher contact rate. That tells me the contact just isn't solid at all. (Eric Seidman)
