2009 A big righty with a very live arm, Brown is already on his fifth organization in the last six years, having frustrated the previous four with his combination of plus-plus velocity, command problems, and some maturity issues. Limited last year due to an early-season appendectomy and some late-season shoulder problems, Brown still missed bats with his 92-96 mph fastball, although his walk rate remained a source of concern. Guys with his size and velocity get all sorts of chances, though; he will likely break camp as a middle man in the big-league pen.
2008 Brown has arguably been good enough to pitch in a major league bullpen for years, but he never quite endeared himself to the Indians or Padres, the latter of whom passed him off on Oakland after a half a year in exchange for Milton Bradley. Brown has consistently allowed less than a hit per inning while striking out more than a batter per, which is a quick and easy indication that he's got what it takes to succeed. A big right-hander with power stuff, he's no trick pitcher, so there's no reason for him not to continue hitting both sides of that equation in the future.
2007 The stuff to get big league hitters out is there--Brown can consistently get it into the mid-90s--but poor command has handicapped his progress. Some within the Indians` organization questioned if Brown has the, shall was say, gonads to pitch in the late innings. It`s San Diego`s problem now, if getting a 26-year-old reliever with more than a strikeout per inning in the minor leagues can be considered a problem. Maybe they`ll find the secret to unleash the genie from this bottle--if Brown has a, shall we say, genie.
2006 The PTBNL in the Milton Bradley deal, Brown has twice missed an entire season due to an elbow injury (most recently in 2003), and has never thrown more than 127 innings in a professional season. The resulting durability questions prompted the Indians to convert him to relief last year. It worked like a charm. After walking four men per nine innings in his career as a minor league starter, Brown shaved that down to 2.5, while his strikeout rate shot up, resulting in a spectacular 4-1 K/BB ratio. Twice called up to the majors in 2005, Brown never made it into a game with the Indians. Expect that to change in 2006.
2005 The other prospect acquired by the Indians in the Milton Bradley deal, Brown needs to quell nagging injury concerns (he missed a number of starts in July because of a dead arm, and the entire 2003 campaign with an elbow injury) and wrestle down his control if he wants to make the jump to the big club. His rep is that he's not the most coachable cat in the zoo, so he's going to have to open his ears if he wants to avoid future injury and not be just another Brown stain on the road to success.
