2010 Finally. For years, Guzman was the well-informed Cubs fan’s version of Mr. Snuffleupagus—the minor-league pitching star that was always talked about but disappeared before the crowd could see him. Having survived the arm surgery trifecta (labrum, forearm, and elbow) with his swing-and-miss stuff intact, Guzman spent the summer as Lou Piniella’s least-heartburn-inducing bullpen option. His unsustainably low BABIP won’t be repeated, but now that everyone’s witnessed his mid-90s heat and nasty slider you can expect Guzman to be a visible member of the late-inning cast. If Carlos Marmol struggles to find the plate, Guzman should be next in line to try and join the Big-C Closer Club.
2009 Healthy slightly less often than Rich Harden, Guzman's latest comeback—from Tommy John surgery this time—got him all the way back to the majors at season's end, and he yet again flashed plus stuff. Guzman's been flirting with possibilities about as many years as Niles Crane mooned over Daphne, but after a few too many teases, you can forgive people who'd like to him finally get around to the bonking already. If healthy in consecutive months, he might yet turn into a quality reliever, but that's a big 'if.'
2008 Never a stranger to the trainer's table, Guzman quietly underwent reconstructive elbow surgery as the Cubs were busy wrapping up the Central and is unlikely to pitch professionally in 2008. What's especially discouraging is that his previous injuries had been to his shoulder and forearm, so this latest is a new area of concern. Guzman's mechanics have never been pristine, particularly on his follow-though, and once he returns, it's probably in the Cubs' best interest to hedge against the injury risk by using him strictly as a reliever.
2007 Once the top pitching prospect in the Cubs` system, Guzman suffered a series of arm injuries that set him back years--a torn labrum in 2003, more shoulder trouble in 2004, and a stiff forearm in 2005. His velocity is back in the 90s, but he`s lost command of what used to be a plus curve and changeup, allowing hitters to sit on his fastball. He`s been an extreme fly-ball pitcher throughout his career, making him a poor fit for Wrigley Field.
2005 Never mind the unimpressive ERAs; this was a very good season for a pitcher recovering from a torn labrum. There has never been any concern about Guzman's stuff, so the fact that his command was as good as it was—the 40/0 strikeout-to-walk ratio in his Daytona line is not a typo—is highly encouraging. The Cubs have every reason to proceed cautiously with Guzman given the wealth of pitching in the system, but there's good cause to be excited.

2010-03-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)So, what is going to go wrong next for Angel Guzman? Rough year. Any chance he gets back to how he pitched last year eventually? Surgery or rehab?
(Murphy from My Law)
Sadly, I don't think there will be a next. All indications are that Guzman's done. I hope those are wrong. (Will Carroll)
