BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2011 One of those Triple-A slugging first basemen good for 20 meaningless home runs a year, Scott Thorman will take his services to Detroit—or should we say Toledo—in 2011.
2010 Former Braves hand Scott Thorman is more likely to invent a method of faster-than-light travel than he is to take ball four, and was granted free agency at year's end.
2009 Having hit .235/.271/.452 against righties across parts of two big-league seasons, Scott Thorman failed to stick as a platoon player. Having posted similar numbers across the board in Triple-A last year prior to becoming a minor league free agent, he may fail to stick as a baseball player.
2008 If Thorman had come anywhere close to an acceptable performance in early 2007, Teixeira would not be a Brave. Instead, after a strong April Thorman was a disaster, batting just .203/.242/.366 from the start of May through Teixeira's arrival at the deadline. Thorman is Russell Branyan without the walks or homers, which means the Braves will be back to square one if Teixeira leaves next winter.
2007 Slugging .508 with a .210 isolated power, as Thorman did at Richmond, might look impressive, but, for a first baseman, it really isn`t. He might have been given more of a shot had LaRoche not broken out, or if Thorman had given the Braves anything inspiring in his brief trials. He`s a below-average first base prospect, and while sometimes the Todd Benzinger or Scott Stahoviak types catch a break, Thorman`s not even at that level. Still, he`s the heir apparent should LaRoche be traded.
2006 A 1st-round pick in 2000, Thorman finally reached Triple-A late last year after spending the better parts of two seasons in Double-A. He`s got some power, as the 21 homers attest, but his plate discipline is severely lacking, and he ain`t no Francouer. The Braves need an upgrade at first base, but Thorman`s got a ways to go before he`s a viable solution.
