2013 Its been three years since ground-ball pitcher Zach Miner worked in the majors as a useful swingman for the Tigers.
2011 Miner showed up at camp last spring with a sore elbow and tried to pitch through it, a plan that sometimes wins you some old-school respect but more often earns you a visit to Dr. Yocum. Currently rehabbing from last Mays ligament surgery, Miner hopes to be back on track and sponging up his usual assortment of low-leverage relief innings and spot starts by Memorial Day, though Bastille Day may be a more realistic goal. The Tigers weren't willing to wait for results and designated the northpaw for assignment in November.
2010 The man who wasn't there, Miner has found a home in the long-relief/emergency starter portion of the Tigers bullpen, earning praise from his managers for his performances, but not any kind of promotion to a better role; that means they don't quite believe what they're saying, however polite. Miner is an average performer across the board, throwing four unexceptional pitches, with no exploitable splits, and nothing to get you to notice he's been in the game.
2009 In 2006, Miner was a mediocre starter. In 2007, he was a mediocre reliever. Last year, he was mediocre in both roles, so I guess we can say he's, what ambidextrous? He's a classic tweener type, without the power to be overwhelming or the command to be a pure finesse type. Still, there are roughly 360 pitching jobs in the big leagues, and he's generally worthy of one of them.
2008 With the loss of Kenny Rogers and the failure of anyone to step up to take his place in the rotation, the Tigers' bullpen had a lot more low-leverage innings to fill last season. Miner, along with Durbin and Grilli, picked them up. Like Grilli, Miner kept the ball down on the way to an effective season, posting a 2.3 G/F ratio and allowing just 14 extra-base hits in 232 opponent plate appearances. Miner was also effective with runners on, stranding 24 of the 30 he inherited. Of the Tigers' three garbagemen, Miner has the most upside.
2007 One of an increasing number of good arms that got away from the Braves organization, Miner brought back memories of Mark Fidrych with a six-start win streak in June and July before faring less impressively his second time through the league. He pitches older than his age, relying heavily on his change and throwing an awful lot of pitches in the dirt, something which his opponents might have caught onto in his scouting reports. He should have a good five-year run as a number-four starter.

2009-10-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)No comment on Nathan not starting the 8th against Tigers with 4-3 lead with 3-4-5 up? Or just not stating the obvious Gardenhire bone head move?
(Dr. Zaius from Norfolk VA)
I can live with it, and he did bring Nathan in later in the inning when it got bad. Guerrier isn't that bad a pitcher, and there's an argument for not blowing out Nathan unless you have to with a game the next night. I can see this one either way, unlike, say, letting Zach Miner end your season. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-02-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)The Free Press ran an article suggesting Zach Miner as a guy with potential as a setup/closer down the road. Does he have the stuff? Is there a comparable guy who's done something similar?
(Ben from Ohio)
I don't really see it, but remember, it's February (just barely), and it must have been a slow day in camp. As much as I bang on the mainstream media, the job of a beatwriter is a tough, tough job. (Christina Kahrl)
