YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Qualls came to Pittsburgh in a junk-for-junk deadline swap that sent Casey McGehee to the Yankees. He still gets a good number of groundballs thanks to his low-90s sinker, but his Achilles heel is an ineffective slider. Formerly his out pitch, the slider doesn’t have the same bite it used to. Until Qualls adjusts his arsenal to compensate, or tweaks his slider, he’s unlikely to profile as anything more than a below-average middle reliever.
2012 The Padres signed Qualls to a one-year deal with a club option for 2012 to help fill the void left by Edward Mujica and Ryan Webb. Like his predecessors, Qualls ate low-leverage innings for much of the year. He later inherited Mike Adams' eighth-inning role, where things didn't go as well. Qualls' ERA in the eighth was more than twice as high as it had been in the seventh, in a similar number of innings. The periodic implosions that occurred when he couldn't locate his sinker made him somewhat less than easy to watch.
2011 In the wake of surgery to repair the dislocated left patella that prematurely ended his 2009 campaign, Qualls altered his mechanics and developed bad habits—collapsing his plant leg and falling off to the side of the mound—which caused his sinker to flatten out. He was pummeled so mercilessly in Arizona that he lost his closer job in mid-June, allowing the fantasy owners of the Chad Qualls Support Group to go their separate ways. Believing him a candidate to bounce back, the Rays traded for Qualls at the deadline, but most of his improvement could be passed off as simple regression to the mean. A free agent at this writing, he may revert to form given more time to heal, but it's equally possible that he's one more ex-semi-famous person on his way out of the majors.
2010 Relief pitchers are quite fickle, given the few innings they pitch each season, and making definitive statements about performance based on ERA is quite difficult. For this reason, it's imperative to evaluate relievers on their "process" more than the outcomes. The prototypical relief pitcher sought by teams will whiff plenty, limit free passes, and keep the ball grounded. Qualls perfectly fits this description, and yet his 3.63 ERA last year is modest given a career-best 6.4 strikeout/walk ratio and a very high ground-ball rate. He pitched well from the standpoint of controllable skills but fell prey to the order of operations syndrome, stranding runners at a below-average rate. Unless your name is Javier Vazquez, this ailment subsides quickly, meaning the only real question mark about Qualls is if the dislocated kneecap that kept him sidelined for the final month of the year will affect his future performance.
2009 Another transfer from Houston in the Valverde deal, Qualls is an underrated commodity at this point, as he's one of the hardest things to find: a consistent reliever. Qualls has had four straight years of fine performances while pitching in 77 or more games, and had his best year in 2008 with a career-high strikeout rate and career-low walk rate. He has two plus pitches beginning with a monster sinker that also has 92-95 mph velocity and causes as many swings and misses as it does ground balls, as well as a solid slider. There's no reason he can't be good for years to come.
2008 Qualls has had a persistent backwards split over his last three seasons, making him valuable as a second "lefty " or, more importantly, as a pitcher who can be used for complete or multiple innings. Throw in a propensity for getting ground balls, and you have a very valuable reliever. Sent to Arizona in the Valverde deal, Qualls will be part of a deep pen that has no clear closer candidate, but he'd be wasted in a 65-inning role.
2007 Qualls didn`t record any saves last year, but he was nearly as valuable as Dan Wheeler in the wake of Brad Lidge`s wilting performance. Qualls`s ability to grind grounders out of hitters and neutralize lefties has a particular value for a bullpen that doesn`t always show up in the box score. If there`s any worry, it`s his workload. If he can avoid a meaningful decline after making 158 appearances over the last two seasons, he`ll be on the short list of baseball`s setup heroes.
2006 One of the class of pitchers that throws approximately one pitch--something that sinks--at three different velocities. This, in turn, causes hitters to beat the ball into the turf for dozens of 6-3 putouts, even after repeating to themselves the mantra `Make this bastard bring the ball up` 40 times during the walk from the on-deck circle to the batters` box. Qualls throws hard enough that even the occasional mistake isn`t a complete cookie. He`s likely to have a solid career as a setup guy, with the occasional year where three or four extra balls leave the yard when he throws a spinner.
2005 Qualls made his first 97 pro appearances as a starter before moving to the Zephyrs' bullpen in June. He was effective out of the pen for New Orleans, then took over the set-up job in Houston in August and was a big part of the Astros' Wild Card run down the stretch. His sinker/slider/strikes mix should work well at Minute Maid Park, giving the Astros yet another cheap, effective reliever.

DateQuestionAnswer
2014-03-14 09:00:00 (link to chat)Who do you think gets the most saves for Houston this year, and is that player worth drafting?
(uvasuperman from Atlanta)
I still like Jesse Crain assuming health, although that's an open question right now. I have no faith in Chad Qualls even if he does start the year with the job. But to your point, Crain is a trade candidate even if he does get on track so all of these guys are late round fliers and maybe even reserve picks in 12-team mixers. (Mike Gianella)
2011-12-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)The only acceptable Yu Darvish pun will come if Toronto signs Chad Qualls and it can be said of their offseason, "Q And Not Yu."
(bradleyankrom from Space)
One of my two was "queue and not yu" but it never really came together. (Sam Miller)
2011-07-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)How much do you think getting bullpen help would help the Angels make the post-season this year? They've already said they don't want to pay for the top-tier guys like Adams or Bell. What other relievers are out there that might make a difference? Koji Uehara?
(Dennis from LA)
Uehara or maybe Jim Johnson. I mean, there are about 424 available right handed relievers, and most of those are second tier guys. Thing about relievers is, let's say you get a Chad Qualls. Qualls could go out for 20IP and give up 2ER or Give up 14ER. It's too tough to predict with the less than elite players, of which there are very few. So, you bring in someone(s) with good stuff who's pitching well & you cross your fingers and pray. (Mike Ferrin)
2009-07-24 16:30:00 (link to chat)Any feeling about what the Yanks should do this trade deadline?
(Nick from NYC)
Move Phil Hughes into the starting rotation, try and trade for someone like Jason Frasor or Chad Qualls. (Eric Seidman)
