2013 Baseball can be a fickle mistress. When a misguided arbitration offer kept Rodriguez on the Brewers roster for 2012, the organization was criticized for its extravagance in paying closer money for a reliever who would merely be setting up John Axford. The Brewers were hailed as visionaries, however, after Rodriguez took the reins from a struggling Axford and saved not only the bullpen but Milwaukee's season—or at least that would have been the case if K-Rod hadn’t turned into a pumpkin at exactly the same time. Rodriguez maintained his low-90s velocity and posted his typically enviable walk and strikeout rates, but batters had a much easier time making contact and hit twice as many home runs—poor harbingers for his future. Only 31 but with a lot of miles on his arm, K-Rod was a risky bet for the Brewers even before his September arrest for domestic abuse.
2012 The tremendous slider that made "K-Rod" so feared in Anaheim gave Rodriguez the best years of his career. In return, he gave his best years to the slider, as his velocity has been on a steady decline since 2006. Even without a slider, his current mix of fastball-curve-change is still effective enough for late-inning work. While he longs to return to the glory of finishing games, he may find that he has to choose between more money as a setup man or a closer's role for a lower-payroll team.
2011 Paying Rodriguez $11.5 million per season, as the Mets did in 2010 and will do again in 2011, isn't a terrible fate. He's an overrated closer, but is capable of coming close to earning that money. Until you get to his option year, that is, a $17.5 million season that automatically vests if Rodriguez finishes 55 games in 2011, at least 100 games combined between 2010 and 2011, or is declared healthy by doctors following the 2011 season. Fortunately for K-Rod, winning a Sensitive Male of the Year award is not one of the qualifiers. A $3.5 million buyout has to be paid if any of the three qualifications are not met. He finished 46 games in 2010, so if the Mets are careful, they can avoid having the option vest. Rodriguez isn't expected to miss any time in 2011 due to his arrest for assault, as his anger management classes fit in around the Mets' schedule.
2010 Rodriguez was better than he looked in 2009; a couple of five-run outings in the second half of the season complete blew up his ERA, which was 2.41 in his other 68 appearances. Still, the Mets probably figured that he'd be something more than the 75th-best reliever in the game (as ranked by WXRL). Rodriguez just isn't the same pitcher that he was with the Angels. The 94-96 mph fastball is now more often in the 92-94 range, and the power breaking ball that was his out pitch is almost never seen anymore, as Rodriguez has lost nearly all command of it. In his defense, he's found a good changeup in its place, but he's hardly the dominating monster that he once was, and the Mets are paying him a minimum of $26.5 million over the next two years to be that guy, not the current version.
2009 Rodriguez finished third in the American League Cy Young Award voting and sixth in the MVP race. The year prior he netted zero votes in either category. What a difference 62 saves makes, because let's be frank, he had much the same year. In 2008, Rodriguez faced a grand total of three more batters than he did the year before; he walked the same numbers of hitters, allowed four more hits, and struck out 13 fewer batters. In other words, he was a little bit worse, except for the saves. While the voters were fooled, the market was not, as the contract Rodriguez signed with the Mets falls in the reasonable range for a top-flight closer. Rodriguez's fastball was a bit off last year, but his changeup got much better to make up for it, and he should keep getting the job done.
2008 The changeup he added two years ago solved his problems with lefty batters and makes him entertaining in a Pedro-at-his-peak way when all three of his pitches are working. Pay no attention to the bouncing ERA, and note that his Stuff scores, which reflect his underlying performance, remain constant. Rodriguez will eventually hold the career saves record, and given the Angels' run context most years, he may get a shot at Bobby Thigpen's single-season mark of 57.
2007 If we earned a wag of the finger anywhere in last year`s book, it was in anticipating a career-altering injury for K-Rod. Having come up a save short of Bryan Harvey`s club saves record in 2005, Rodriguez set the new record in 2006; he also led MLB in WXRL. Rodriguez logged 22 saves in the season`s final two months--impressive, but also a reflection on how hot the Angels were. It also demonstrated why it won`t be easy to top Bobby Thigpen`s single-season saves record of 57. You not only need a team that can win ballgames, you need a team that doesn`t win too many games by too large a margin; the Angels are pretty close to that, and it would still take a lot of things going K-Rod`s way for him to have a shot at Thiggy. This winter, the Angels signed Justin Speier for $18 million over four years; you can understand how that contract might create problems with K-Rod two years away from free agency and about to re-enter arbitration.
2005 When Percival missed most of June, K-Rod closed and pitched extremely well, allowing seven hits and three runs in 15.2 innings pitched. Overall, Rodriguez allowed just six of 36 inherited runners to score, or 17%. When Percival returned Scioscia moved him right back into the closer's role, but Rodriguez was doing the heavy lifting. With Rodriguez slated to close, the only danger to the Angels is that Rodriguez will be "saved" for save situations. In 2004 he had 22 appearances of an inning-plus, and should continue to be used that way if the Angels want to get optimal use out of him.
