2005 As a fifth outfielder, McCracken's not a bad guy to have around for close to the league minimum. He doesn't have much power, doesn't hit for a huge average, but he can slap some line drives, play acceptable defense, and won't generally do a lot of moaning about wanting an increased role. Realistically, he's a .265/.335/.375 guy, who plays enough defense to be a caddy for a luggish corner OF slugger. If you need more than that, look elsewhere.
2003 McCracken has built a nice little career as a fourth outfielder. He can run but not steal bases, play defense in CF well enough so you don’t want to beat yourself repeatedly about the head and shoulders with a tire iron, covers the corner spots fairly well, and will hit the occasional gapper. Don’t kid yourself, though—he’s not going to hit like he did in 2002 on a regular basis.
2002 Here's a great litmus test for a ballclub. McCracken is a serviceable fifth outfielder but should never be asked to play a larger role than that and should never be paid more than the league minimum. If your local ballclub brings him into camp and signs him to a one-year deal worth $500,000, call the front desk and see if they'll give you a quarter million bucks. Why not? It's obvious they're just throwing it away. McCracken is interchangeable with at least 50 guys in the minors. The decision to let him have even one at-bat at DH during David Ortiz's absence was nothing short of bizarre.
2001 He wasn't going to be in the book, but just before press time, the Cardinals signed him to a minor-league contract. Quinton McCracken has the skills to be a decent fourth outfielder and is joining a team with two outfielders, Jim Edmonds and Ray Lankford, from the Major League Crystal Collection. McCracken may be the best bench player on the Cardinals.
2000 He missed the last four months of the campaign with a torn right ACL after getting tangled up with an outfield wall. Some people in the baseball media said his loss devastated the Devil Rays' offense. They're the ones who still can't fathom the Orioles' collapse. McCracken is expected to be healthy in 2000, but with Greg Vaughn and Gerald Williams on the team, there’s no job waiting for him.
1999 That prototype TB player rears its head again. He did get off to a blistering start, producing many delusions about him deserving to be on the All-Star team, but as the season went on he returned to form. The center fielder for the first half of the season, he spent much of the second half in left field, which provided the team with outstanding defense and even less offense than it started with.
1998 That was McCracken’s peak year. Hope you didn’t blink. Useful spare-part outfielder, not good enough for a larger role. A smart manager can use a player like McCracken, who runs well, doesn’t embarrass himself in the field and takes the occasional walk. Devil Ray fans will delight in his talents as their everyday center fielder. Blech.
1997 This should be McCracken’s peak year. Don’t blink.
1996  What is it with General Managers and speed? Every time some GM picks up, signs or drafts a guy who obviously can't hit, they rave about his blazing speed. McCracken can run, and has shown significant improvement with the wood. I think it's a fluke, but he's certainly earned at least a full time spot in AAA to show his stuff. Great name.
