2014-09-15 19:30:00 (link to chat)What is your favorite esoteric part of the game of baseball?
(Kate from Texas)
Not entirely sure this qualifies as esoteric, but I love that the more you watch, the deeper an appreciation you gain for the unusual. If you show a casual fan a Jackie Bradley Jr. catch or a Billy Hamilton steal or a Giancarlo homer, they can appreciate that it's "cool." But they don't get that same "wow, what?" feeling that comes from a play or player breaking your internal expectation for what can and can't be done on a baseball diamond. It keeps the game endlessly entertaining to me, and gives me a reason to watch even when Bobby Valentine is my favorite team's head coach. (Ben Carsley)
2012-09-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Why do owners/GM's repeatedly recycle established boneheads like myself, Jim Tracy, Clint Hurdle, Bobby Valentine, et. al., instead of giving the Venturas & Mathenys of the world more opportunities? Thanks, Dan!
(Scrap Iron from On queue for Hurdle's job)
Scrap Iron, that's a good question. Sometimes unheralded or inexperienced people fail to get opportunities because the scope of the GM or owner is not broad enough to make their candidate list. I have found that some really terrific people are there if you are thinking about candidates ALL of the time. There is nothing wrong with a guy who's done it before, because there are different reasons why people get fired in one situation and thrive in another. Robin Ventura was a great hire by the White Sox, and his demeanor during last night's post-game presser was amazing for a first-timer, in fact it was text book. Some people are born to lead, and you have to keep your eyes open for them all the time. It is such a tough job, but there are so many different ways to do it. (Dan Evans)
2012-10-04 14:00:00 (link to chat)So, Valentine is gone. Most disastrous managerial hire in decades, or ultimately just a flukish year with his hiring/firing having little outcome on the past/present/future Sox?
(Jake from Springfield)
One reason that the Bobby Valentine hire came to be viewed so negatively is that we sort saw this coming. It seemed as though everyone recognized that besides the higher-ups in the Red Sox organization. And because of that, I think the adverse effect of having Valentine as skipper has been severely overblown. With all the injuries the Red Sox had and the pitching staff that was assembled, I don't think the second coming of John McGraw could have managed this team to the playoffs. (Daniel Rathman)
2012-04-23 14:00:00 (link to chat)What would surprise you more?: Bobby Valentine coaching the Red Sox on April 1, 2013 or Youkilis playing elsewhere on April 1, 2013.
(Tim from NY, NY)
I'm not sure either of them is likely to happen. If the Red Sox continue to play they way the they've been playing, Valentine may not last very long whether or not he deserves to. Youkilis has an option year on his deal after this one, so getting a player like him on a one year deal (at, I believe $13 million) isn't so bad. That assumes Youkilis isn't in the midst of falling apart. I don't think he is, but there are some who might. But you asked a question and I haven't answered it yet. So: I'll go with: if Valentine is still the Red Sox manager next April I'll be (mildly) more surprised. (Matthew Kory)
2012-04-23 14:00:00 (link to chat)What if Bobby Valentine just put the fake mustache back on? That's the most obvious solution to the team's ills, right?
(Jason W. from It's a secret)
There is nothing in the world that isn't improved by fake mustaches. That includes real mustaches as well. (Matthew Kory)
2012-04-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Bradley. The first ten days of the Bobby Valentine Era in Boston haven't been the most smooth. Starting pitchers staying well past their due dates, calling out well-liked hard working players in the media, and lets not forget installing Nick Punto and Mike Aviles in the lead-off spot. Tell me it's going to get better.
(mattymatty2000 from Portland, OR)
At what point do we start blaming the players for some of the clubhouse chaos occurring in Boston? Yeah, I know My Bobby Valentine (if I keep saying it, it will catch on, yeah?) has made some, shall we say, "curious" decisions since the start of the season, but this is two highly-regarded and well-respected skippers they've turned against in less than a year. Who are the leaders in the Red Sox clubhouse? (Bradley Ankrom)
2011-11-30 13:00:00 (link to chat)A couple days ago, Murray Chass wrote a piece on his blog basically stating that Bobby Valentine is one of the most disliked persons in baseball, particularly by other managers. Is he truly that disliked, or is this simply Chass with an old axe to grind.
(Adrian from Washington D.C.)
Valentine is certainly a polarizing figure, mainly because he has an outsized personality and the ability to think differently. However, one should consider the source when it comes to criticizing him; at this point, Chass is an old coot with an axe to grind about everything outside his mother's basement. Once a pioneer in the reporting of the business of baseball, he now embarrasses himself on a daily basis with more vitriol than your average Dick Young column. (Jay Jaffe)
2011-12-02 14:00:00 (link to chat)Your thoughts on Bobby Valentine claiming that he invented the Wrap?
(Howard from The Hamptons)
I have thoughts on Valentine certainly. I think he's great for the Red Sox, and commentary on TV broadcasts is a horrible way to judge a managerial candidate. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-08-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)You are given the keys to the 2012 Dodgers ... who do you appoint as manager and GM?
(dianagramr from NYC)
GM: If I couldn't poach Kevin Towers from Arizona, I'd give Kim Ng a chance to test her mettle, though I'd be tempted to give Dan Evans another shot as well. He got a raw deal in L.A.

Manager: If I'm staying within the organization, I'd like to see what Tim Wallach can do. I might be tempted to see what Bobby Valentine could do in that job.

I'd also consider bringing back Jim Tracy... Just kidding. I'd blow up Dodger Stadium, salt the earth and move the team to Orange County before letting that happen. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-09-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Can you give us your best guesses on the new managers for next year by team?
(Jack from Boston)
Just guessing: Bobby Valentine to Seattle, Tim Wallach to Dodgers, Wally Backman to Mets, Ryne Sandberg to Cubs, LaRussa and Dusty Baker staying still, and Sharktopus to manage the Diamondbacks. Anyone else? (Jay Jaffe)
2009-09-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)The Nationals are so far down that it's hard to see the light at the top of the pit. However, it seems to me that the transactions the Nats will need to concern themselves with first are those that continue to dismantle the Bowden/MLB structure that led to this mess. Mike Rizzo has let a few player personnel people go already, and hopefully will continue that work. Do you believe, like I do, that Jim Riggleman should also be thanked and dismissed, and replaced with Bobby Valentine? Valentine seems to last only so long before he grates on his colleagues and leaves, but in the meantime he seems to be able to pull teams out of the cellar.
(HalfStreet from Fairfax VA)
You're assuming Bobby Valentine would touch a job offer from the Nats with a ten-foot pole, and I sincerely doubt that. Given that the club has no internal candidate intimately familiar with the prospects they've got already, I'd actually suggest Riggs as a decent placeholder for the time being. He's a decent tactician, and familiar with the dissatisfactions of slow, ugly rebuilds from his days with the Padres. If Rizzo's comfortable working with him, you could do worse. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-05-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hot rumor is that the Mets are talking to Bobby Valentine.
(fielding99 from Manhattan)
Nothing says "quality organization" like repeatedly changing your manager in the middle of the season.

Lightning round. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-10-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Brewers Manager Choices according to rumor: Sad retreads, or is there a good idea in there?
(nstampe from Madison, WI )
If I can switch to the M's for a half-second, I saw someone write yesterday that Bobby Valentine is good at turning around losing teams. Now, Bobby is always a lot of fun, but exactly when did he prove that? Anyway, I saw Davy Johnson mentioned for the Brewers, and I thought, "Well, maybe he got the bug again during the Olympics." No idea if that comeback would work out, but the Brewers could use an experienced hand at this point. They don't need a builder, they need a mild tinkerer who can fit the pieces together and get them to an extra win or two a season. (Steven Goldman)
2008-06-17 15:00:00 (link to chat)We know the way it was handled was wrong but were the Mets right in firing Willie Randolph?
(David from NJ)
Well, as botched a job as it was, I don't entirely disagree with the decision to dismiss Randolph. As Rob Neyer pointed out at ESPN, there's a good argument to make that he's not the right manager at the right time for this club, even given its flimsy construction.

Managers aren't solely tacticians. They're leaders of men (some very boyish men at times). Different managers have different styles, but some seem to be better at protecting their teams by placing themselves in the line of fire and drawing the attention away from the struggles of their clubs. Ozzie Guillen is a good example of this now, as batsh*t crazy as he may seem, there's a method to his madness. Joe Torre does the same thing while exuding an aura of pure calm. Bobby Valentine, Casey Stengel, Leo Durocher, Tommy Lasorda - the styles can vary but that function is an important one.

Randolph didn't handle that aspect of the job very well. The Mets have carried a very negative aura around them since last year's collapse, and not even the acquisition of Johan Santana could erase that. At some point Randolph should have just said strong words to the effect of "Don't connect this club to last year's mess, it's a new day and we've moved on so you should too." Instead he played the race card and in doing so started the countdown on his own sell-by date. (Jay Jaffe)
