2007 Welcome back, Hiram! After a year away from Baseball Prospectus, we`re absolutely thrilled to see you again. We hated to leave one of organized baseball`s best names out of last year`s book, but when a 30-year-old outfielder with a .217 lifetime batting average misses almost an entire season . . . well, we hope you understood. After posting those monster numbers with Sacramento, you`ve certainly bought yourself another precious slot in our book, not to mention another few summers of baseball in the finest cities north of Mexico that Triple-A can offer.
2005 Bocachica's probably going to be floating around the league as a spare outfielder and utility guy for years to come. He's got the range for center, but doesn't hit well enough to be anything more than a defensive sub.
2002 Bocachica has been around so long as a borderline prospect that it's hard to believe he's just 26. A similar player to Mark Grudzielanek, his defense has been the primary impediment to him having a greater role in the bigs. If he gets 300 at-bats, he could post something in the .270/.330/.440 range, even in Dodger Stadium. A utility guy who can do that would fill a big gap for the Dodgers.
2001 Mark Grudzielanek's contract means that Hiram Bocachica won't be playing second base for the Dodgers. Given how he plays it, that's not the end of the world. Bocachica should be a good, cheap bench player who can contribute in a lot of ways. He can play four positions, hit a little, and pinch-run. He makes an interesting test case for Jim Tracy.
2000 Bocachica has a decent mix of offensive skills and adapted fairly well to second base last year, being voted the best defensive second baseman in the Texas League in a Baseball America poll. The big improvement in his plate discipline was a welcome surprise. He’s not going to be a star, but I think Johnson could get a lot out of him as a utility player if given a chance.
1999 No shot to start in Los Angeles, not that he was a good bet to contribute. Bocachica would be a good player to develop as a utility guy, someone who can legitimately play five or six positions, come off the bench and pinch-run or slap singles. It's a hard thing to groom a 23-year-old for, but a player like that would be valuable. Didn't hit at all after elbow surgery, so watch him carefully this spring.
1998 Everyone believes Bocachica is a major league hitter, but he inspires comparisons to Wilfredo Cordero because he doesn’t seem to have a proper defensive position to play. He’s nominally a shortstop, but will probably end up at second base and is unlikely to dazzle in the field no matter where he plays. Of more concern is the drop in his offensive production upon moving to Double-A; if he doesn’t turn that around, the defense won’t matter. Has had injury problems.
1997 The Expos’ next potential phenom. Bocachica is a great young hitter but an erratic fielder, and an elbow injury left him unable to play the field much this season. Offensively, the only skill he lacks is power, and he’ll probably pick that up as he ages. I doubt he’ll make it to the major leagues as a shortstop, but he should make it at some position and challenge for a batting title someday.
