2004 Pronounced Smythe, as in the old-school NHL division. A big league pitcher is to Smyth as the Edmonton Oilers were to the Winnipeg Jets.
2003 You want a rough way to break into the majors? Called up to replace Lieber, in his first game, Smyth had to face Barry Bonds and the Giants, pitch in Coors in his second start, and then face Curt Schilling in his third. He has good velocity for a lefty, and throws four pitches for strikes. There are worse options as your fifth starter, but he’s not a great bet to beat out Zambrano, Benes, and Cruz, and since signing Estes, he’s no longer their token lefty starter. He might stick as the second lefty in the pen.
2002 The Cubs had initially considered Smyth a future reliever, and they are only now taking him more seriously as a starter as he continues to succeed in the role. He’s already wearing the usual labels applied to lefties, such as "scrappy" and "crafty." In English, that means he can throw four pitches for strikes, he keeps the ball low, and he doesn’t throw hard. Smyth had to be shut down early to have his shoulder ’scoped, but he’s in good shape for 2002.
2001 A 1999 fourth-rounder out of USC, Steve Smyth is already an organizational favorite. He’s got the “fiery competitor” label and throws four pitches for strikes. He might end up getting bumped into relief, because while the Cubs like him, they’re also realistic about a left-hander who doesn’t throw hard.
