2003 At this rate, Orie’s pursuit of the Cubs’ third-base job is a setup for his being featured as the heavy in Ace Ventura 4: Lauren Holly’s Alimony Comes Due. His grievances would be just, because he could still be a very creditable temp at the hot corner: he can field the position, hit for a bit of power, and he’ll take a free pass.
2002 Orie’s fatal attraction to the disabled list has prevented him from getting the major-league job he deserves; at least a half-dozen major-league teams had inferior starters at third base in 2001, and no team had a better backup. Orie doesn’t have the power typical for a third baseman, but he has superb control of the strike zone and is an excellent defender. His agent was remiss in allowing him to sign with the Phils last off-season, given all the teams with bigger holes at the hot corner.
2000 Orie had taken advantage of Mike Lowell’s absence to grab the third base job with a good May, but injured his groin and quadriceps in rapid succession, reopening the door for Lowell. He’s been dealt to the Dodgers, primarily as insurance in case they lose Adrian Beltre. If Beltre is a Dodger, Orie will be an Albuquerque Duke. Or a Backstreet Boy.
1999 With all the talk about how Jeff Pentland was as a great hitting coach because of what he’s done for Sammy Sosa, why didn’t anybody mention that his tinkering with Kevin Orie’s swing to get more power was a major screwup? Batting coaches are at their best when you don’t notice them, but this year’s orgy of congratulations shouldn’t go unpunished. By going .500 in terms of pupils, Pentland is really no better or worse off than Walt Hriniak, who over a long career really only seemed to have helped one player (Ron Karkovice) and ruined another (Rich Gedman). Orie’s a useful guy to have around, but his constant injury problems will keep him from ever being a star. Think Vance Law, and you won’t be disappointed.
1998 Orie continued to be as injury-prone as he was in the minors, where he survived injuries to both wrists and a separated shoulder. An outstanding defensive player, but the injuries could sap his potential to improve offensively.
1997 Injuries to each wrist have hampered his progress so far, but his march to be “The Man Who Replaced Santo” is up and running. He was being talked about as a September callup this season when he separated his shoulder, shutting him down a month early. Orie was named the best hitting prospect in the Southern League this year. He had a big AFL campaign and will probably win the regular job for the Cubs this spring. Since he’s an ex-shortstop with a great arm, the feeling is that he’ll be a good defensive player.
