DateQuestionAnswer
2014-09-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who killed the 411?
(Big Erv from Club DTM)
It's not dead, it's just resting! Neither Siano nor I could give it the time and attention this year that we would've wanted, and we didn't want to mail it in, so we decided to leave it on the back-burner for now. But, think of the 411 like Rickey Henderson... not retired, just "not playing." Or maybe like Minnie Minoso, and we'll return for an at-bat or two at some point down the road. The podcast may be on hiatus, but the 411 philosophy lives on! (Cory Schwartz)
2013-11-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Your book is one of my favorite ever about baseball. What's your favorite book about baseball?
(Mark from Omaha)
Probably Roger Angell's FIVE SEASONS. But I'm also a big fan of Pat Jordan, and A FALSE SPRING is a wonderfully honest memoir. But frankly, Mark, I could list about a dozen others that are still on my top shelf. Do you know a collection called CULT BASEBALL PLAYERS? I forget who edited it, but it has contributions from various writers about wonderful players like Vic Power and Minnie Minoso. (Kevin Kerrane)
2013-03-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Will this year be the rookie season of the greatest Cuban born player of all time? Is that too high of a mountain to climb? Or only a mountain too high to accurately see over?
(Paul from DC)
Out of curiosity, I used the Baseball-Reference Play Index to find the top 5 Cuban-born players by WAR.

1. Rafael Palmeiro 66.1
2. Luis Tiant 61.8
3. Tony Perez 50.1
4. Bert Campaneris 49.2
5. Minnie Minoso 47.5

That seems really ambitious for Gerardo Concepcion.

Unless you meant Puig. Then it's still really ambitious. (Zachary Levine)
2008-02-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is anyone going to sign Julio Franco? He turns 50 in August, and his goal was to play until then.
(Rich from Columbus,OH)
My guess is that someone will give him that chance. Minnie Minoso was certainly a better player than Franco -- he had a lifetime 130 OPS+ -- but Franco was better after the age of 40. While Minoso’s cameos came at ages 50 and 54, his “real” career ended at age 38.

Minoso trivia: His one base hit at age 50 or over came off Sid Monge.

Franco trivia: He has reached base all 4 times he has faced John Franco.

Franco trivia part 2: He went 1-for-7 in his career against Gaylord Perry, who is now 69 years old. (David Laurila)
