DateQuestionAnswer
2012-03-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)What kind of playing time do you reasonably expect for John Mayberry this season?
(Prospecting from Holding pattern)
A lot. He should be the primary first baseman while Ryan Howard is on the shelf, and once Howard comes back, I fully expect him to get a lot of the playing time in left field as long as something crazy doesn’t happen, like Domonic Brown coming up and demolishing or Juan Pierre blackmailing Charlie Manuel. (Derek Carty)
2011-08-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Are the Phillies throwing their series against the Diamondbacks to hurt the Giants? How else do you explain Charlie Manuel leaving Roy Halladay in to pitch the 9th last night?
(Hangingsliders from San Francisco)
That was crazy. I think having Roy Halladay in the game can feel a little bit like having a great hand in poker, where it just gets too hard to get away from it even when you're probably beat. Charlie just thought he had a stronger hand than he did. (Sam Miller)
2010-08-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)How crazy was Charlie Manuel's decision to play Roy Oswalt in left field toward the end of a 16-inning game? You can imagine the post-game press conference if Oswalt snaps an ankle running around out there. Is there any scenario in which a staff ace should be fielding a position? (Answer: No.)
(drmorris from SF)
Do people just randomly snap ankles all the time when they take the field? There's probably a better chance he breaks an ankle coming off the mound to field a ball than there is of him hurting himself in the flat lands of the outfield. (Marc Normandin)
2010-07-06 14:00:00 (link to chat)NL All-Stars: Omar Infante vs. Joey Votto - discuss.
(GBSimons from Boise, ID)
The internet has already expressed its displeasure at the pick, so I don't have much to add. However, if we're going to blame someone, we should blame Bud Selig instead of Charlie Manuel, since MLB apparently decreed that a utility player must be present for each side.

Chinese food is here--I'll tip well. It's hot out there. (Ben Lindbergh)
2010-06-18 14:00:00 (link to chat)How many more awful calls are we going to have to withstand before MLB does the right thing and institutes replay? Or, maybe I should ask, are you in favor of replay?
(mattymatty2000 from Portland, OR)
I share the same sentiment as many others -- add an umpire, have him constantly watch a video monitor, and use some type of headset system for quick and accurate results. These replays would take 7 seconds in most cases. Most of those against it envision replays taking 15 minutes, yet most of that time is due to managers arguing. I mean, how hard was it to explain to Charlie Manuel that a ball hit Raul Ibanez last night? The explanation is, it hit him, end of story. I understand protecting players and such, but most of the problems are with managers themselves and not replay. It STILL makes me angry that Galarraga didn't get a perfect game, regardless of how nice Jim Joyce might be. There is NO excuse for that. (Eric Seidman)
2010-03-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)Geovany Soto lost 40 pounds. Matt Stairs is in the best shape of his life. Even Charlie Manuel is making waves with weight loss. So which BPer is coming into the season in the best shape of his life?
(Mike from Chicago)
Having seen many recently for book tour stuff or the winter meetings in December, nobody really stands out. I remain a fat man of rock. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-01-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)So I read that Geovany Soto lost 40 lbs in the off-season. So did Matt Stairs. Is Jenny Craig the new steroids?
(Zeus from Olympus)
I dunno, you're the king of the gods, you tell me. After what Charlie Manuel did on Nutrisystem, though, I have to think that's the diet method of choice. (Tommy Bennett)
2009-11-02 15:00:00 (link to chat)Any chance Girardi reverses course and starts Posada tonight? The bottom of the lineup could be Gardner-Molina-Burnett, which is all kinds of ugly.
(Rob from Andover, CT)
Joe usually announces the lineup at his presser, which is in an hour. I'm missing Charlie Manuel for this. I'm more broken up about this than you'd think--Charlie's great. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-11-02 15:00:00 (link to chat)I was traveling over the weekend and so may have missed out discussion about the decision not to start Lee last night. What was the stated rationale for it? The fact that Blanton pitched pretty well doesn't really make the decision any more palatable in my opinion.
(Jonathan from New York)
Lee has never been used on short rest, and Charlie Manuel didn't think it was a good idea to introduce him to doing so in the World Series. Given that the other option is an above-average starting pitcher, it's perfectly rational. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-10-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Jay ... thanks for the chat! This is gonna be one interesting Series, and it may come down to which manager makes the fewer mistakes. So, which MANAGER do you take in a seven-game series, assuming they have had the exact same roster?
(dianagramr from NYC)
Hey Diana! I give the edge to Charlie Manuel here. Over the course of the regular season, Joe Girardi showed considerable improvement relative to his first year at the helm of the Yankees, but he's made numerous mistakes this fall, overmanaging both his bench and his bullpen, getting too attached to small-ball tactics, and creating controversy by starting Jose Molina, who hits about as well as Girardi did with his legs tied together.

Though his unwillingness to separate Utley and Howard in the batting order drives me crazy, Manuel has done a great job of patching together his shaky bullpen in October, he's shown a quick hook when he needed to, and he's stayed out of his own way. Plus he's already got the ring from last year, so the burden of proof is on Girardi to prove he's the better pilot, and I simply don't see it. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-10-23 16:00:00 (link to chat)Unless Phils are up 3-0, Should Cliff Lee go 1-4-7, Hamels 2-5 and Happ/Pedro 3-6? How would you do it?
(Mo from Las Vegas)
Lee in Game 1, Pedro in Game 2. Let Hamels start at home in Game 3, and work from there. Part of that is me wanting to see Pedro pitch in Yankee Stadium again and part of that is me wanting the Phillies to throw one righty and one lefty at the Yankees in the first two games. Happ is valuable out of the bullpen, and don't forget Kentucky Innings Eater. Now that's what I would do. What Charlie Manuel will do, most likely, is Lee, Hamels, Martinez, Blanton, Lee, unless offdays permit Lee to go on normal rest, or if the series is in jeopardy and the Phils need Lee to go on short rest. (Eric Seidman)
2009-10-20 14:00:00 (link to chat)Joe, is there any manager in the game that would start the bottom of the 11th with a right hander to face Arod with a one run lead, then go to his closer for the remaining outs?
(Mark from CT)
Charlie Manuel sort of did this already, once, but "closer" on his team was ill-defined at that point. As I've written, one of the biggest problems with the closer myth is that it involved suspending the belief in gaining tactical advantages that drives bullpen usage and roster management for all the innings prior. With rare exception, you should still want to think about those things in a save situation. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-10-20 14:00:00 (link to chat)Manuel has been managing each of these playoff games like it's game 7 of the World Series. Some might call this overmanaging. Is this a good stategy or should you treat it more like a regular season game and not use as many relievers? I think you should use these guys as close to their regular season roles as possible. Blanton and Happ out of the pen isn't my cup of tea.
(Tony from (Conshohocken, PA))
Charlie Manuel is absolutely killing it right now. He's having a fantastic postseason. He's adjusted beautifully to the personnel challenges. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-10-07 14:30:00 (link to chat)Which playoff team has the largest single weakness, and do you see it being the reason it gets eliminated?
(dtwhite from Toronto)
Phillies bullpen if Charlie Manuel insists on calling Brad Lidge's number.

As I write this the Phils are putting together a rally with a Werth walk, an Ibanez double, a Ruiz single and a horrible Hawpe misplay. They now lead 2-0, so we may get a chance to see my theory tested today. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-09-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)With their bullpen woes are the Phils doomed to going out of the playoffs in the first series?
(RodeoJones from Nj)
Doomed is probably a bit extreme, but their Lidge problem puts the pressure on the offense and the rotation - particularly Hamels and Happ - to come up big and keep them from needing to protect a one-run lead.

It also puts the pressure on Charlie Manuel to actually think outside the box by calling upon somebody else - Madson, Myers - instead of brainlessly going for Lidge. Of course, if he could do that, we wouldn't be having this conversation. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-09-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)decisions for Phillies in the offseason to upgrade on Ruiz and Feliz. Ruiz has shown something more this year, so that might be static, but what about a M.Taylor for Alex Gordon swap?
(philliesopher1 from NY NY)
As much as we could have just as easily have asked the same question as far as needing upgrades at third and catcher last winter, that's interesting to think about. The Royals did just trade away a problem child in Danny Gutierrez, after all, and maybe this is what Dayton Moore's feeling empowered to do, deal away prospects he's not all that wild about. I'd certainly love to see what Gordon could do in the weaker league in a bandbox with Charlie Manuel giving him pointers on hitting, since that would all equal good stuff, but somehow I doubt the Royals are really about to ditch Gordon. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-09-14 16:30:00 (link to chat)Anything wrong with letting Pedro put it all out there every fifth day? Big pitch count numbers the last two times out...
(karn from Bon Temps)
This is a good question. I guess a lot of it depends on whether the Phillies want to use him as a starter in the playoffs. If so, they need to be more careful. If not, then it's probably not the end of the world do leave him out there in a big game. The bullpen is pretty depleted and isn't really that strong this year, so it might be wise for Charlie Manuel to see if he can last deep into games to minimize the bullpen usage. For instance, Happ for 7 innings might not be as effective as Martinez for 7 innings, but he's probably more effective than Martinez for 6 innings, given the Phillies troubles getting good innings out of their bullpen. (Matt Swartz)
2009-09-14 16:30:00 (link to chat)What are the chances that Charlie Manuel deep-sixes the Phils chances by insisting that Lidge is the closer in the post season? Surely someone in the front office will ask him to stop, right?
(mattymatty from Phillly, PA)
He did pull him out of the closer role in favor of Madson recently, though Lidge did get one of the two saves in the doubleheader yesterday. Manuel clearly doesn't have the confidence in his ability to turn it around that he did earlier this year, but I think he still wants him to succeed terribly. If he was willing to yank him in the 9th inning against the Nationals, I have to imagine he's not going put him out there against Manny Ramirez if he's not showing improvement. Eric Seidman's article the other week doesn't make it sound all that likely he will. (Matt Swartz)
2009-04-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Joe, will Charlie Manuel learn that hitting three lefties in the middle of the order consecutively isn't the best lineup? Even vs. a right handed pitcher it sets them up for end of game situations exactly like last night.
(Jon from DC)
Yesterday was a pretty good object lesson. Even if a righty comes in to face Werth after Howard (assuming Victorino second, Werth fifth), at least you've made the manager burn a guy. This is going to happen in any close Phillies game until Manuel puts an RHB behind the platoon player. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-10-24 14:00:00 (link to chat)According to ESPN, Boras is pushing for a longer contract for Manny. How many years do you think he'll get? Where? And why does Tim McCarver get so worked up about Manny, yet he doesn't seem to be bothered by Brett Myers's penchant for wife-beating?
(Nick Stone from New York, NY)
Hey Nick! Thanks for dropping by. Realistically, I don't see Manny getting four (or more) years anywhere, though I think somebody could flatter him via a three-year deal that approaches A-Rod's average annual value. While I think the Dodgers are players for him, I see the Mets as potential suitors, but my sleeper pick is the Phillies given the Charlie Manuel connection (managed him in the minors in 1993, and again in 1999, serving as the Indians' hitting coach in between), Burrell's free agency, the ballpark, the fact that they're a winning team right now.

As for the McCarver thing, yeah it really is galling to hear him and Buck slobbering over Brett Myers without at least acknowledging his off-the-field woes, even if they are (hopefully) behind him. The guy is no mensch, and there's zero excuse for riding a high horse regarding what Manny is alleged to have done while ignoring something that's considerably more serious. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-09-23 13:30:00 (link to chat)You were pretty negative about the Phillies all year. Anything that can be learned from their (likely) playoff campaign, in terms of what you didn't like about their chances and how they overcame that?
(e from lawrenceville)
Without looking, I think I had them at 83 or so wins, and they'll finish at 90-92 or so. I suspect most of that difference is the bullpen, which vastly overperformed any kind of realistic expectations. Throw in Shane Victorino, who's more durable than I expected, Pat Burrell having another strong year, and Jamie Moyer being better than expected, and you have the difference. Only Ryan Howard, really, has underperformed. That's a lot of things going right, and not much going wrong. The question is, was there a reason for this, or is it just random? I don't think much of Charlie Manuel's tactics, but he sure seems to be in the dugout for a lot of successful teams. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-07-25 14:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think about Charlie Manuel removing Rollins for being late? Is benching one of your best players really the best way to engage in a pennant race?
(nick from sfo)
I'm not very good at managing people, so this is an area where I'm inclined to keep my mouth shut. That aspect of being a manager is just not something I can relate well to. I'll criticize personnel usage, tactics, what have you, but I just don't know that outsiders can bring a lot to a situation like this, and I certainly don't think I can. (Joe Sheehan)

2010-10-06 10:00:002010 Playoffs Day OneCharlie Manuel's post-game pressers are always classic. He usually starts off by regurgitating the box score.

"Well, like, Blanton, you know, pitched well. 7 innings, 4 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, 7 strikeouts. Jimmy went 2-4. Ryan hit a double. Questions?" (Eric Seidman)

Well, right now I'm sure Charlie Manuel would kill to have that decision, and I'm reasonably sure he'd LIKE to kill somebody if they ask that question given how much fun he had answering the Lee ones.

I don't think he dares to do that given all the things he's said about Hamels lately, and the fact that Happ hasn't thrown much nor has he thrown well during the postseason. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-10-28 17:00:002009 WS Game OneJoel (GA): Goldman: The Yankees *could* have had a lead.

That's true, and I apologize for the limp hyperbole. Still, taking a close game and turning it into a blowout is almost as bad. They almost completely removed the temptation for Charlie Manuel to go to his pen, which would have been a possibility had the thing still been close.

And you can call me Steve if I can call you Joel. Or Daisy Buchanan. (Steven Goldman)

2008-10-27 16:30:00World Series Game FiveIn the postgame last night, Charlie Manuel defended Blanton by taking off his cap and pointing to a stain on the brim, saying he'd "worn it all year."

These would be the caps with the 8x8 "World Series" logo on the side. So Charlie was confident, you'd say.

(Someone said maybe they put the logos on the caps for the players. I have my doubts. They all look brand new.)

For Derek: "Jungle Love" during the break. If WCBP was a radio station, I'd listen to it. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-10-22 16:30:00World Series Game One"jessehoffins (Swarthmore, PA): Joe- As to Howard's placement in the lineup, you really think pushing him back to eighth makes sense against a pitcher that almost never makes it past the 6th anyway? I understand his awful platoons, but Charlie Manuel has to believe that getting him one extra at bat late in a game is worth it. "

An at-bat that, if it means anything, will probably come against J.P. Howell, or David Price, or Trever Miller, all of whom Howard can't hit.

He's a platoon player.

2008-10-22 16:30:00World Series Game OneRichard (San Diego): Back-up catcher as your DH? When your normal starting catcher is already begging for a late-inning pinch hitter? Reactions?

As John Perroto pointed out in his Unfiltered entry, this isn't exactly uncharted territory for Charlie Manuel. Joe's the one who apparently reserached this on John's behalf: "Manuel left himself without a backup catcher 32 times during the regular season as he pinch hit for Coste 22 times and pinch hit or pinch ran for Ruiz 13 times. While that adds up to 35, three of those games came after the September roster expansion when rookie catcher Lou Marson was also available. "

It's an odd move, nonetheless, particularly because it's compounded by the fact that EITHER player may make an early exit for pinch-hitting/running purposes. If your DH has to take the field and you're stuck batting the pitcher, that's still workable with pinch-hitters and sacrifice bunt attempts. But leaving yourself with, say, Jayson Werth (who was drafted as a catcher, IIRC) behind the plate as an emergency catcher - well, now you've kind of got me rooting for the splatter just to see how it looks. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-10-02 11:00:00Thursday Playoff GamesI kind of like the White Sox today, largely because I think Javier Vazquez is pretty underrated, and James Shields can give up the homers that drive the Sox offense.
