2010-08-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Steven, I was looking at the stats of the 27 Yankees the other day and was dumbfounded by the lack of strikeouts by the pitching staff comparative to their low ERAs, is this a function of the era?
(Don from Toronto)
Completely. Batters were more contact-oriented back then. The '27 staff was not, even in context, big on strikeouts, being about average. They had several good-not-great pitchers, even if Waite Hoyt did make the Hall of Fame... You can't look at pitching peripherals for those years the same way you look at them now. Defense was so much more important to pitcher success than it is now, and it's important now. (Steven Goldman)
