2009-01-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)What's going to happen with Juan Cruz and Jason Varitek? Would anybody in their right mind give up a first round pick for either one of these guys? Or a second round pick, for those teams in the first half of the round?
(russadams from White Bear Lake, MN)
I think that Varitek and the Sox will find a way to kiss and make up because the player has absolutely zero leverage at the moment and the Sox appear to be postponing finding a viable alternative behind the plate until he signs elsewhere, which doesn't appear likely to happen.

As for Cruz, I think it's more likely that a team who wouldn't lose a first-rounder, as you say, would be one who'd be willing to make the move. Wouldn't surprise me if that winds up being the Nationals, who have some work to do on their bullpen after losing both Cordero and Rauch last year. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-12-23 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is the Tiger's payroll so high that their name isn't even surfacing on Brian Fuentes? His price seems to be falling, and would see the Tigers as desperate for a closer.
(LyleCox from Cleveland)
Skip closers, the Tigers should be desperate for relief help in general, and one high-profile signing by itself doesn't fix the pen. If anything, they're better off penciling in Zumaya as the guy who gets the most save opportunities, accepting that they have a bit of lefty help already in hand, and could use a power right-hander. I'd rather see them chasing Juan Cruz. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-12-11 14:00:00 (link to chat)What's the story with Juan Cruz? As Mets fan, I was excited by the idea of him being the setup guy -- and IMO he is a better bet than Putz. Who is knocking on his door?
(James282 from Nj)
That's a great question and I don't have a great answer. It is like he's become the invisible man. I never heard his name mentioned here and I don't know why. I think he is going to make a fine pickup for somebody. (John Perrotto)
