2003 Yes, another Creighton guy, so where else was Alan Benes supposed to get another shot but playing for ex-Creighton coach and Zugmeister Jim Hendry? He’s been slapped around in the PCL for two straight seasons, so health isn’t the issue. He isn’t even fooling right-handed hitters the way he used to. However, the spirit is still willing, and he gave the Cubs a game seven starts at the end. He might make it as the fifth starter, but he won’t keep the job.
2002 There's nothing here to indicate that Alan is going to be effective in any role any time soon. His velocity and movement have vanished, his command is gone, and he needs to rebuild his motion and career from the ground up. He'll likely end up as a rotation filler for some Triple-A club, and he will have to get lucky to get another shot in the bigs.
2001 He's still recovering from 1997. His strikeout rate hasn't rebounded and he still looks tentative out there. Alan Benes will likely have a successful career, albeit out of the bullpen rather than in the rotation. He should be a setup guy in 2001 and has the potential to thrive in that role, a la Jeff Nelson or Mike Jackson.
2000 He's never going to be the same pitcher again. While the Cardinals are talking about his revamped delivery in which he isn't throwing across his body, he showed very little velocity during his rehabilitation work last year. He may reclaim some sort of career in the bullpen, and he might even have a nice run in the rotation this year. Wish him well, but don't bet on his being much more than a reminder of what they shouldn't do with Ankiel.
1999 He’s had surgery (again), and as of early December his status is still very uncertain. The worst crime to charge LaRussa with as the Cardinal’s manager is that he fragged Benes for a ’97 team going nowhere.
1998 A better pitcher than his brother, though that’s no insult to Andy. He has command of four pitches (good fastball, cut fastball, slider and changeup), and is already a big LaRussa favorite. The pressure of his ’97 workload resulted in a partially torn rotator cuff, but he should be fine for ’98.
1997 Benes deserves a lot of congratulations for this season. He showed that he can beat people with his great sinking fastball and that he had recovered fully from the injured forearm he suffered in 1995. He is the first starting pitcher prospect that Tony LaRussa and Dave Duncan have developed since Britt Burns and Rich Dotson during the Carter administration. They deserve credit for breaking their old bad habits; now let’s see if they can do it with the large number of other talented young pitchers on the Cardinals’ farm.
1996  The crown jewel of the organization. He's big, strong, throws four pitches well and has the competitive attitude every coach loves. He was sidelined early in 1995 with forearm stiffness, possibly related to the 206 innings he threw in 1994. He came back from that to dominate at Louisville down the stretch, and continued to dominate in the Arizona Fall League, setting a record of 62 strikeouts in 55 innings, along with a 7-1 record and 1.78 ERA.

2009-04-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)A short answer to the question about managers learning from their mistakes: Tony La Russa. Alan Benes. Adam Wainwright. Does the answer make sense?
(Bill from New Mexico)
I can't tell sometimes if Tony La Russa is brilliant or the luckiest manager alive. Or both/neither. His career and the choices he has made are strange. (Marc Normandin)
