For those who haven't caught it, the Jays fired John Gibbons--was there a conference call over the weekend or something?--and hired Cito Gaston to manage out the year. To their credit, the Jays did manage to not just hire a coach on staff, which had been the mistake the last two times they did this in the Ricciardi Era. (If you've fired your manager midseason three times in seven season, your processes are wrong.) Gaston inherits an excellent pitching staff, good defense, and terrible offense that won't be adding Adam Dunn anytime soon. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-05-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Speaking of managers, what are your thoughts on John Gibbons? Losing back to back 1 run games without using your closer seems like a mistake. I know change for the sake of change isn't a winning strategy but don't the Jays need to shake things up somehow?
(Taylor from Toronto)
What's interesting is that two years ago, Gibbons was pretty aggressive about using B.J. Ryan in the eighth inning. I wonder if the lesson he learned was, "I break guys that way." In any case, Gibbons is not part of the solution, but there's only so much to be done with that roster. Too righthanded, too slow. All the pitching and defense in the world--they have about 22% of it, actually--won't help. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-03-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)First manager to get fired/resign? McLaren is 40:1.
(airjakub2 from Atlanta)
Wow, really? Those are great odds. He doesn't have a track record or a name, expectations are high and unlikely to be met, and the GM is playing for his own job.

Good bet. Er, if gambling were legal.

I'd say the first guy to go is...hmmm...good question. John Gibbons. (Joe Sheehan)
