| 2010-06-28 14:00:00 | By happy coincidence, I daydreamed a question for you not more than a day ago, and here you are. Not that I'm trying to sneak in the backdoor, but do consistent players get any sort of boost in the public's estimation of their HoF chances, and should they? I think here of a Jack Morris. Even though his heights were more very good than HoF, his workmanlike consistency--on top of being relatable and making him seem like a good guy--kept Tigers fans from a lot of crappy starts from a more up and down pitcher. I wonder if consistency (if it could be defined) would ever end up having a predictive value on eventual election. Thanks for suffering a long question, Jay. (Jim Clancy from Exhibition Stadium) | Consistency is pretty difficult to quantify, except perhaps in the way it enables players to accumulate the benchmark stats that most of the public regards as constituting "a good season." I think of Steve Garvey rapping out his 200 hits, 100 RBI and .300 batting average every year and how highly esteemed he was in his day, and yet how far his star has fallen in light of a more modern statistical reckoning. But then I also think of guys like Blyleven and Don Sutton who were pretty consistent on some levels but didn't rack up the 20-win seasons that some of their peers did, and aren't held on the same level as them even if they may have been more valuable.
In the end I suspect peak value holds more sway on the public's estimation of a potential HoFer, because people tend to remember the high points, the outliers, the things that break pattern rather than the pattern itself. (Jay Jaffe) |
| 2010-03-26 13:00:00 | Which baseball annoucers are your favorites?
I enjoy the rapport between Hawk Harrelson and Steve Stone quite a bit and the Red Sox guys (Orsillo and Remy) are fun too. (JG Ballard from Vermillion Sands) | Vin Scully is my favorite, hands down. Great bit from the Sons of Steve Garvey site yesterday (http://www.sonsofstevegarvey.com/2010/03/vin-scully-on-bill-veeck-and-colored.html) about Scully telling a story about racism, Bill Veeck, and the flight of major league spring training facilities to Arizona.
I'm no Michael Kay fan, but I really like Ken Singleton on the Yankees games, and enjoyed David Cone while he was around. Al Leiter is decent too. I don't mind Krukow and Kuiper for the Giants, even though they're "the enemy" to a Dodger fan. For national games, I'm really eager to hear more of Jon Sciambi on ESPN, because he's a friend of BP and because I like what I've heard. (Jay Jaffe) |
| 2008-07-30 12:30:00 | Think Kotchman has the potential to have a Steve Garvey type career. Their numbers are very similar through the same age. (Mike from Utica, NY) | Yeah, I do, especially if the Braves let him cut loose and swing the bat instead of making him to the opposite field like the Angels did. He has a lot of untapped potential. (John Perrotto) |
| 2008-01-08 14:00:00 | I'm saddened by that Raines result. Off the top of your head, how many less deserving 1st ballot players have had better vote totals? (lexomatic from True North) | Steve Garvey at 41.6 percent stands out, as does Maury Wills at 30.3 percent. (Jay Jaffe) |
