2002 Aven is the type of player who can fill a platoon/pinch-hitter role fairly inexpensively. He has some sock, and in what amounts to one full season in the bigs, has hit .277/.344/.441 despite playing in some pretty bad hitters' parks. While most clubs like to get more defense than this from their 24th or 25th guy, Aven would be better on the bench than at least two dozen guys who have regular big-league jobs.
2001 The Pirates lost Bruce Aven in a roster crunch and the Dodgers were the beneficiaries. Aven wasn't, as the Dodgers have about $27 million tied up in corner outfielders, severely curtailing his opportunities. He can hit well enough to be a fifth outfielder and pinch-hitter.
2000 Because of their desire to keep payroll down, the Marlins gave opportunities to some good hitters who had been stuck in the upper minors for a few years. Aven, who missed almost all of 1998 after Tommy John surgery, won a piece of the left-field job in June. His second trip around the league wasnít as successful (about 150 points of OPS worse). The Marlins traded him to the Pirates for Brant Brown; his path is crowded in Pittsburgh, but he should end up with a reserve outfielder job.
1998 See Brian Giles. Two consecutive strong seasons in the minors. While his hitting is improving, his glove is a liability. No evidence to suggest that the Indians will give him a chance. To be fair, neither is there any evidence that he would be a star; think a Grade-B Giles.
1997 Aven isnít really considered a top prospect. Heís a puny Doug Dascenzo clone with power, but he lacks range in the outfield. He hit well in the AFL, and heís considered a great hustler. Heíll be an unheralded success like Brian Giles.
