2004 Veres spent substantial time on the disabled list due to shoulder tendinitis, but pitched better than his ERA suggests when he was available, walking just five hitters in 32.2 innings. Veres's trademark pitch is his sinker, which acts more like a breaking pitch than a power sinker like Kevin Brown's or Carlos Zambrano's. Veres intends to have off-season shoulder surgery. and he's a 37-year-old free agent, so this might he it for him.
2003 After rescuing Veres from the Rockies, they got three nice little years out of him, after which the Cardinals chose discretion over nostalgia (and an option worth more than $5 million), letting Veres become a Cub for a couple of million. While he’s a useful enough utility reliever, equally comfortable in long relief or closing, on a hot day in Wrigley, don’t be surprised to see a few of his splitters rattling around on Waveland Avenue, spite fence or no.
2002 Veres had one of those lingering injuries that doesn't get as much attention as it should. His index finger was problematic for a large part of the season, which prevented him from effectively using his splitter. In such circumstances, the loss isn't just the pitch in question—it's the lost threat of that pitch, leading to decreased effectiveness of all your other pitches. Veres is a good bet to rebound some in 2002, although it may be in a new role with a new team.
2001 Dave Veres signed a big contract extension and will likely be the closer through 2002. He had some shoulder trouble in 2000, but it was nothing to worry about: he got hurt picking up his young son. I'd like to find some way to blame that on Dave Duncan. Veres has very good stuff, and he knows how to pitch. He'll be a solid closer for the foreseeable future.
2000 He’s consistently one of the better relievers in the league. Veres got the chance to close games regularly for the first time in his career in 1999, and he ended up setting the club record for saves with 31. When looking at the performance, it becomes apparent that last year wasn’t really one of his better seasons. He‘ll be the Cardinal closer in 2000.
1999 It took two years, but he finally recovered from the case of terrycollinsitis he contracted in '95. Should be an anchor for the Rockies in middle relief this season and a favorite of the Leyland, although he may see fewer lefties.
1998 Looked like his career was in danger, but recovered to have a solid year in middle relief. Drop in his strikeout ratio is cause for concern; he’s still one bad season away from retirement.
1997 Did a terrible job of justifying his price tag (Sean Berry), running up a 5.44 ERA through the break. He pitched much better after that, but it probably wasn’t enough to save his job. At 30, he may be forced to go to spring training as a non-roster invitee and hope for the best.
1996  Losing Berry rips a hole out of the Expos' offense, but Veres gives Montreal the bullpen depth they used to enjoy with Wetteland and Rojas. Felipe Alou runs a bullpen better than most managers, and won't abuse Veres the way Terry Collins did in Houston last year.
