2005 Rotator-cuff surgery wiped out his '03 and put its stamp on his '04, as he struggled to find the big-time fastball he'd had during his charge through the system. He wasn't ready to join the major league rotation in August, but the Astros simply had no good choices and landed on this particular bad one. He'll continue to improve at a slow pace, on his way to being a good pitcher again in 2006.
2003 Last yearís handling of Hernandez can charitably be referred to as "tough love." After partially tearing his rotator cuff in a baserunning mishap late in 2001, Hernandez admitted not being 100% in spring training, but opened the campaign in the rotation anyway. He pitched hurt all season, sidelined three times with shoulder problems before being diagnosed with nerve impingement and rotator cuff tendonitis. When healthy, there might not be a young southpaw in the league with Hernandezís combination of stuff, poise, and mound presence. As their lone left-handed starter, the Astros desperately want Hernandez in the rotation, but his arm is ticking. As we went to press, Hernandez was due to see Dr. James Andrews after shoulder MRIs showed a suspected rotator cuff tear. While the good doctor and his peers have made great progress in treating elbow injuries, this type of shoulder injury could deal a crushing blow to Hernandezís otherwise promising career.
2002 Generally ranked behind Wilfredo Rodriguez before this year, Hernandez is a short Venezuelan left-hander. Although his outstanding curve gets the most press, he throws in the low 90s and has a good change-up, so weíre not talking about Doug Johns. Brought up in mid-August, he might have been the Astrosí savior down the stretch, but he had to sit out the rest of the year after injuring his shoulder diving into second base. In part because it wasnít a pitching injury, he hasnít had surgery, instead spending the winter rehabbing. Considering his age and his history of nagging arm problems, thereís a lot to worry about here. He might be good for a few weeks or months, but he will break down.
2001 Like Wilfredo Rodriguez, Carlos Hernandez is a left-hander out of Venezuela and a sign that the pipeline that started with Bobby Abreu hasnít dried up yet. Hernandez did not develop major-league velocity until recently, which gives him an advantage in that heís already learned to hit his spots. He's still several years away, and that still may not be enough time for the Astros to figure out what to do with the 15 pitchers ahead of him.
